# 172 - The 4 Ducats
Today I will show you a coin that has a relative numismatic value and, at the same time, has no numismatic value.
That looks very strange, but I will explain.
This 4 Ducats "Franz Joseph I" were minted from 1872 to 1915.
They weight 13.96g with gold purity of 98.6%.
The mintage between 1872 and 1914 had a minimum of 5,243 units in 1876 and a maximum of 150,691 units in 1912.
These coins were made to circulate and they have numismatic premium due to its preservation and mintage.
That not occurs with those that have 1915 as the date of mintage. The truth is that no such coin was minted in 1915. They are all restrikes and were minted whenever the Austrian Government needed to sell gold bullion, from 1915 until today.
They have no numismatic value and today, with the gold spot at U$1184.80/oz they are worth around U$480.00 each.
The reverse shows the double-headed Austro-Hungarian eagle with crown, orb, and scepter.
The obverse shows Franz Joseph I facing right.

Beautiful ducats. For non-numismatist, restrikes are a great way to get bullion gold with timeless beautiful design of old without having to pay the premium of old numismatic coins. I love it.
