# 121 - Columbia
Continuing our series of the American Half Dollars Commemoratives, we will today present the 1936-S "Columbia".
As all the commemorative half dollars, it weights 12,5g with a 90% silver purity.
This coin commemorates the Sesquicentennial of the establishment of Columbia, South Carolina, as the capital of the State.
The obverse depicts the Godess of Justice standing with the capitol building of 1786 at the left and that of 1936 to the right.
The reverse shows a palmetto tree (the state emblem) surrounded by stars.
A total of 8,007 coins were minted in San Francisco and distributed. The actual price is around U$300.00 in this grade.

I don't know why they chose Justice, but it is a beautiful and simple coin.
Is this the first that a goddess of justice is ever featured in a coin? I wonder. That is a nice coin. WOW... it must cost an arm and a leg to collect the commemorative half dollar coins, especially the old ones. How ,ong have you been collecting them? Are you currently subscribed to the US Mint coin program?
You can have a beautiful collection of Classic American Commemoratives graded MS62/63 and you will spend much less than the values that I wrote in the articles. I have been collecting this series for a little more than twenty years and I am not subscribed to the US Mint program because I only buy slabbed American coins (not bullion).
