Beautiful Keshi Pearl from the Australian South Sea.

in #steemsilvergold7 years ago

A few months back I stumbled upon a great article by an Aussie steemer by the name @plumey . He was showing off his incredible collection of cultured pearls that he acquired from working on a pearl farm for many years. I learned something new when he showed his Keshi pearls. They are occasionally formed inside a seeded Oyster next to a cultured pearl, like a twin but with a very different appearance. Keshi pearls can have a very irregular shape and are as close as you can possibly get to a natural saltwater pearl. Each one is unique and because of their rarity they are valued at roughly the same price per gram as 24k Gold!

I have always had a love of natural materials, textures, and colours. So I was fascinated as soon as I saw there stunning colourful shimmer and diverse form. @plumey could tell how much I liked them and he surprised me big time by sending me an early Christmas pressie! A beautiful Keshi Pearl weighing 1.6 grams! This is a real Treasure and I will cherish it and pass it down through the family!

Keshi is a Japanese word meaning 'poppy' which refers to any pearl without a nucleus. They are formed in a rather similar way to the ambergris from my previous post, to protect an animal from a sharp foreign object or irritant such as parasites or grit. In clams they secrete a substance called ** Nacre** which is deposited in layers causing the pearl to grow with age.

They are a possible form of currency like gold and silver, because of their visual appeal and rarity they are in demand for Jewellery production and hold their value over time. Go check out plumeys page for more detailed information as he is an expert. He puts out some great content so have a look and show him some love! Thanks for looking and I hope you learned something new.

Very cool! On one of my deployments I picked up some nice pearls for my wife and daughter, I also bought just a plain jane string to hang onto for awhile... None of them are Keshi pearls though that's for sure!

Oh wow, I have never seen a keishi pearl that is this huge. They are usually rather small and more oval compared to this almost round shape!

Thankyou yes it's alot bigger than I expected it to be and the colours that shimmer on the surface are incredible :-)

Nice, my wife’s favorite jewelry 😃

I'm not surprised, they are so beautiful to hold its the first time I've ever seen one and now I can see there allure :-)

I did not know they were that valueable, good to know!

Knowledgeable article about "Keisha pearl"..Ladies favorite jewellery... Thanks for your post..

always thought pearls were very interesting I think I might need to pick one up for the stack now, thanks for sharing

It looks lovely. I prefer pearls when they are not perfectly round. Makes them look more natural I find. That one is so cute :)

thankyou i agree the unusual shapes have much more character to them, the colours it has dont show on camera but it shimmers lovely pinks and greens! :)

Ooh! Green is my favourite colour and one of my alter egos likes pink lol I've seen pearls shimmer a bit purple and green mixed together. That was pretty amazing.

Hello & Cheers!! I'm a content detection and information bot. You are receiving this reply because a short link or links have been detected in your post/comment. The purpose of this message is to inform your readers and yourself about the use of and dangers of short links.

To the readers of the post: Short links are provided by url shortening services. The short links they provide can be useful in some cases. Generally their use is benign. But as with all useful tools there are dangers. Short links can be used to hide all sorts of things. Quite frequently they are used to hide referral links for instance. While not dangerous this can be deceptive. They can also be used to hide dangerous links such as links to phishing sites, sites loaded with malware, scam sites, etc. You should always be extremely cautious before clicking on one. If you don't know and trust the poster don't click. Even if you do you should still be cautious and wary of any site you are sent to. It's always better to visit the site directly and not through a short link.

To the author of the post: While short links may be useful on some sites they are not needed on steemit. You can use markdown to format your links such as this link to steemit. It's as simple as [steemit](https://steemit.com) Unlike short links this allows the reader to see where they are going by simply hovering over the link before they click on it.
