COIN SHOW VISIT - 1982 CANADA SILVER DOLLAR PROOF - BISON SKULL

Today's Coin Show Visit was a new adventure. I have never been to a coin show. There was a Coin and Currency Show in town, so I decided to go. As I arrived, two hours before it ended, several 'dealers' were leaving.

So, here's my discovery.

The APMEX logo still intact stating "Canada 1982 Silver Dollar Proof". I thought - that's cool.

FIRST LOOK

Let's take a look inside. It looks like it has never been opened since it was inspected by No. 10 - that's cool.

SECOND LOOK

Removing the inspector tag showed some skull of an animal - that's cool.

This is a BAD ASS BISON SKULL.

Let's take a closer look. Apparently, it is a BISON SKULL and it looks COOL as HELL.

ELIZABETH II - D. G. REGINA

On the other side is ELIZABETH II. That's neat too. This appears to be a younger image of Elizabeth II.

TAKING IT HOME

Anyways, I picked it up and I wondered whether it was rare or not.

So, here's some details from APMEX. The coin is out of stock.

The coin is 50% Silver, with 0.375 troy oz of Silver.

This is a commemorative coin celebrating the centennial of Regina, which is the capital of Saskatchewan.
It displays a BISON SKULL (cool as hell) with the Saskatchewan Parliament Building, between the horns.

Can #steemsilvergold help with more information on this coin?

It is OK for me to use #teamcanada on this post ?

I still don't know if it is rare or not. It is a PROOF COIN and it looks fantastic.

Are there any Canadians that can help me out? Is this rare or not?

I still like it.

Beautiful commemorative proof you found there @goldkey! It's not suprising to me that there were more proof strikes of this particular issue because of the commemorative nature of the coin.

Right! OK! It is a commemorative, so it's not a normal coin, so they made many more Proof coins. That makes sense now. Thanks for making the point.

You like skulls? Here! This was a coin part of a legal fight between US and European coins issuers.

This looks cool. I couldn't find the story on a legal fight. What was that about?

I believe SM mint was (and is) making Lunar skulls and started with Ghana in 2015. However a German mint copied the idea and also showed a Ghana official CoA signed by Ghana hotshot for the 2016 coin that I have. SM mint went to Palau and now Gabon. A kind of lawyer reacted (freindly) on me showing the coin on YouTube.

thats one of my favorite coins. But I'm from Regina, so I'm biased.

There were way more proofs minted than regular, becasuse thew never circulated, and they aren't terribly rare, but it still is one of the best designs for the 80's 50% dollars. They go for about $15 here normally in a flip or 2x2, yours would probably sell for $20-$25 with no problem, because of the box.

Nice buy!

Thanks @fat-elvis, I love the design. It sounds like they are collectible. Did you collect any of them? I think the design is awesome. For me, that's really what counts.

I do. When I find the 1$ coins for the right price, I rarely hesitate. There's some great designs with the proof dollars!

Here is a little bit more info. Looks like the mintage of the proof was around 759,000. The regular strike was a much lower mintage at 145,000. Still a very beautiful coin. Hope this info helps.

Thanks for the information. That looks odd that the proof mintage is more than 'regular strike'. Thanks.

No problem. That is odd for there to be that many more proofs. If you ever need anything identified post it up, gives me something to do at work. lol

Sweet coin man. Isn't it just a steer tho?

I don't know... I just thought it was a BULL at first, which is why I got it. What's the difference, I don't know... I put BISON in the post because that's what APMEX said. Six of one, half dozen of the other...

Pretty cool looking coin, too bad its only 50% silver, would love to see a tripple 9 version.

How much did you score this bad girl for?

I got it for $7.50 USD

That is a good price. The lowest price in Ebay was $9.86 this year.

Yeah, good steal 😀

nice coin :), you like collector coin sir :)

Thanks. Yes, I like finding coins with great designs.
