Day 7 of What's in the box? Volunteer Medal and Overseas Bar.
This is the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. It was granted to persons of any rank of Naval, Military or Air Forces of Canada who voluntarily served 18 months between Sept 3rd 1939 and March 1st 1947. source
650,000 of these 92.5%(sterling) silver medals were awarded.
This little piece is called the Overseas Bar. It was issued to anyone who served 60 days outside of Canada( time spent in Newfoundland also counted). It looks like it is made of silver( or plated) but I haven't found that information- only that it has a silver maple leaf. 525,000 of these bars were awarded.
It would seem this medal has the wrong box top. I'll switch them around next time I visit the lock box. Stay tuned for more adventures from my grandpas wartime collection.
