An Aussie Trifecta

Check out these Aussie beauties! Each coin is 0.5 oz with a $0.50 AUD face value. They have a silver content of .999 and were minted in Perth between 2013 and 2016.

Two different half oz. cuties.

I picked up the coins in two separate lots. First purchase included the War in the Pacific coin and the Victory in the Pacific Coin. Each coin was minted to honor the partnership between Australia and the United States during WWII and the two nation’s continued friendship today.

The War in the Pacific coin was minted in 2013. The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The reverse features a bald eagle standing tall against images from the US and Australian flags (stars and stripes and southern cross).

I am particularly fond of this coin as the eagle depicted is actually a picture of the Australian-American Memorial located in Canberra, the capital of Australia. I used to live in Canberra. I am American. Husband is Australian. So, I have a sentimental soft spot for this silver.

As a side note: The Memorial in Canberra cost £100,000 to build in 1954! The money was raised through donations and the purpose was ”to perpetuate the services and sacrifices of the United States forces in Australia and to symbolise Australian-American comradeship in arms". The monument is built of steel and aluminum disguised as stone. It stands 259ft tall. The eagle’s wings extend overhead verses to the figure’s sides to prevent wind from toppling the monument.

The Victory in the Pacific coin was also created to honor the close tie between the United States and Australia forged during the fighting of WWII. Victory in the Pacific also represents Japan’s surrender to allied forces. This formally brought WWII to an end.

Like the other coin, the obverse also features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The reverse is an image of another eagle. This time the eagle holds an olive branch to symbolize peace. Again the bird flys in front of images taken from the US and Australian flags. This coin was minted in 2016.

The last coin to share today is the Battle of the Coral Sea. This one came to me as a gift from @summertooth! Such a good guy. ☺️ Thank you Summer!

The Battle of the Coral Sea took place over four days in May 1942. This was history’s first air-sea battle where planes were launched from carriers to engage enemy troops. During the battle, US and Australian forces defeated the Japanese preventing an invasion of New Guinea. This battle is known as “the battle that saved Australia” as Japanese control of New Guinea would have completely cut off Australia’s access to their US allies.

Like the other two coins, this one features Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. The reverse has an image of a naval vessel. The US flag and Southern Cross complete the image’s background. This coin was minted in 2015.
