Forms of Life - Jean-Luc Ponty - Jazz That Changed Me, part 2
From the same album as the beautiful "Once a Blue Planet," which I posted a few minutes ago, "Civilized Evil," this song captured me from the start and has yet to let me go.
As I noted in my last post, the first time I heard the song, my mind was immediately transported to the kelp beds I so loved diving among, and the myriad forms of life abounding there; from massive schools of tiny fish, swirling and changing direction like underwater flocks of birds, to the larger fish that would appear and scatter the school, to still larger fish, turtles, and the "big movers" such as dolphins, sharks and whales.
And, as I noted, it was upon hearing this song that I really wished I was a film editor, and who knows, as much as technology has advanced in intervening years, perhaps I'll have to give it a try. to allow non-divers to see, finally, what it is I love so much about the kelp beds and rock reefs of California.
The album's title, "Civilized Evil," refers in large part to the "civilized" governments and corporations of the world, destroying natural resources wholesale, in the guise of "progress," all the while without a care as to how their actions affect ecosystems as a whole, because their legal and financial "educations" never gave them any moral or ethical grounding in reality. But I digress.
