I started to write textile series post in these days, I feel that I need to separate the topic of digital archive which is not much related to textile. Therefore, I would like to periodically write a series of production or stories concerned with archiving. Today's post is the first one.

最近染織に関する投稿をシリーズで書き始めたのですが、染織にあまり関係しないデジタルアーカイブ化や、それにまつわる書きたいことがあるように感じてきました。そこで、アーカイブ製作などに関するポストのためのシリーズも定期的に書いてみたいと思います。今日はその1回目です。

Actually... I attended a funeral wake last night.

実は昨日、ある方のお通夜に参列してきました。

The deceased is Mr. Yamamoto Kiyokazu, the president of Japanese traditional roof tile technology conservation committee who holds the nationally recognized selection preservation technology. It means he is a holder of "National treasure" in craftsman department. I started weaving because of this project of "Ancient roof tile Reproduction Project" for the restoration of the Heijo Palace in Nara city which began in around 2001. He is a genuine craftsman who supported my weaving activities. Ramie cloth is needed when people make roof tile in the traditional way. I saw many media treat this big news so some of Japanese might have known his passing away. He was 86 years old.

故人は日本伝統瓦技術保存会会長で国認定選定保存技術保持者（屋根瓦葺（本瓦葺））の山本清一氏です。国認定選定保存技術保持者とは、職人や工芸家における「人間国宝」にあたる方々です。実はこの方が2001年頃から始められた平城宮跡大極殿院復元のための「古代瓦復元プロジェクト」に参加するために機織りを始めました。それ以来、私の機織りの活動を応援して下さった生粋の職人さんです。先日から多くのメディアで取り上げられていたのでこの訃報を目にした方もおられるかも知れません。86歳でした。

I talked to him around the beginning of October. It was when I returned from the weaver training in Showa village. I called him to make sure I start weaving a ramie cloth for his request. He didn't catch my call but he called back to me one hour later. I didn't talk with him for a while, but his voice on the phone was very weak... I felt that something happened to him.

私が最後に話したのは10月始め頃でしょうか。東北での機織り研修から戻り、依頼されている麻布の製織を始める前に確認の電話を入れたときでした。久しぶりに掛けた電話には出られず、1時間くらいして折返しかかってきた電話の声は弱々しく、直ぐに何かあったんだなと感じました。

 

Unlike a thick and powerful voice as normal, talking weakly in a weak breath sound to be a different person, and he said "Actually, I'm hospitalization now, I got surgery three days ago" with his special dialect. I asked him the place and what happened, but he just said "I'll call you when I get well." He was always dignity, so I guessed probably better not to call him again and just wait for his call, but it never happened.

力仕事で鍛えられた身体から発せられる太く力強い声とは違い、息苦しそうに弱々しく話す様子は別人のようで「実はいま入院しとんねん。3日前に手術したところや」と言われました。何があったのか、どこの病院かをそれとなく尋ねてみましたが「また元気になったら電話するわな」と言って切ってしまいました。いつも威厳と風格がある方でしたので、お見舞いに行くなども嫌がられるでしょうし、連絡が来るのを待つしかありませんでしたが、ついに力尽きてしまったようです。

After I heard about his passed away, I did not quite understand the actual feeling. But various memories came up while driving to go to the ceremony place last night. I started learning about cultural assets and folklore since 2001, and I met him same year. so I learned a lot through talking with him in the project, like history, techniques, tools, preparation, the attitude as a craftsman, the way of thinking, the way of living, sometimes playing... not only the techniques but also philosophy as a craftsman.

When I visited his office sometimes I just listened. Because I'm not his disciple or family not a business partner, not a government people... so it may be easy for him to tweet something he wanted to say and worried about. In that sense, he was a maestro so I'm afraid of saying this but I feel like I was kind of a friend to him who was able to open his mind from his pressure.

先日訃報の連絡を受けてから、なかなか実感がわかずにいたのですが、斎場へ向かう車の中で色んな思い出がこみ上げてきました。2001年は文化財や民俗の世界に触れ始めた最初の年ですので、プロジェクトでお話しをさせて戴くことを通して、職人としての心構えやものごとの考え方、立ち居ふるまい、様々なことを勉強させていただきました。私が女にしては木工や畑仕事も熱心だったからか、面白がって随分可愛がっていただきました。ここ数年は少しずつ体調が良くない日が増え、何度か打合せで事務所を訪れましたが、少し弱音を吐かれることもありました。瓦業界や会社、行政と関係がない私には、何となく呟きやすかったのかも知れません。そういう意味では職人としての師匠であり、プライドを持って復元活動に携わる同士というか、友人というか、おこがましいかも知れませんがそんな関係だったような気がします。

Many people were there at the funeral wake and I saw many people from government, companies, also temple priests. At the beginning of the funeral, the image was introduced as Mr. Yamamoto's trajectory, but when I saw a picture he was in the hospital, I lost my words... I knew he had a lot wanted to do and I also wanted to learn more from him. On my way home, I was filled with sadness and lonesome feelings.

お通夜には多くの方が弔問されていて会場から溢れるくらいでした。冒頭には山本氏の軌跡として映像が紹介されていましたが、病床のお姿を見ると辛くて何とも言えない気持ちでした。まだまだやりたい事を沢山お持ちでしたし、私ももっと色んなことを教えて戴きたいと思っていましたのでとても残念です。帰り道には悲しく、そして淋しい気持ちでいっぱいになりました。

Farewell to people who are important in life comes equally, surely to anyone. But in recent years, having more opportunities to talk with elderly craftsmen and their families, I feel that the creation of craftsmen 's digital archive is like a " Shukatsu/終活" in Japanese, it means "Making plans and decisions for the end of your life".
Craftsman's work is closely related to their life itself, and is connected many things such as disciple, friends, families, techniques, tools, introduced media, photographs, videos... etc. What we can do is collect these information and record their voice about talking their life, work, family and about the information what they have. To record the paths in their life.
I feel that this is the aim of making digital archives on craftsmen and engineers. I think that their skills, wisdom, human relations were conveyed in detail to their families or disciples before. However, since there are many craftsman who do not have successors anymore, it might be the only person like me in a position are able to do it.

人生で大切な人とのお別れは平等に、そして誰にでも必ずやってくるものです。でもここ数年、高齢の職人さんやそのご家族と話をする機会が増え、聞き取りを行ううちに職人さんのデジタルアーカイブの製作は「その人の『終活』に関わらせて戴くようなもの」だと認識するようになりました。職人の仕事は生活そのものと密接に関係し、その人が関わった人たち、仲間、作品、紹介されたメディア、写真など多くのものをまとめ、音声や映像でその内容に関する聞き取りを残し、その職人が歩んだ人生を記録すること。これが職人や技術者に関するデジタルアーカイブの目指すところなのであろうと、強くそう感じています。以前であればそれらの技術や知恵、人間関係などはその家族や弟子に細かく伝えられたのではないかと思います。でも後継者がいない職人が多い中、それができるのは私のような立場の人間しかいなくなっているのかも知れません。

There are plenty of things that must be borne in our mind who produces the archive. A similar attitude is necessary for the production of the "Disasters Archive" that leaves records on the earthquake, hurricane, flood disaster.Without psychological, philosophical understanding, we cannot produce good archives and contents. Objectively observe and feel what they want me to do, what they need, how I can help... and then just keep doing my best... this is the most important thing to create their archives with appreciation and respectation. アーカイブを製作する側も心して関わらなければならないことが沢山あります。震災に関して記録を残す「震災アーカイブ」の製作も同じような心構えが必要でしょう。心理的・哲学的な理解なくしては、いいアーカイブもコンテンツも製作することができません。何を伝えたいのか、何が必要とされているのかを客観的に観察し、感じ、精一杯の努力をすることが取材対象者である人たちへ最低限お返しできることであるように感じています。読んで戴いてありがとうございました。
