Likecoin: An Extra Monetization Option For Your Posts

I learned about Likecoin earlier today when @chekoler mentioned it in one of his latest posts. I thought it was worth checking out, so I visited the site to find out what Likecoin was all about. Since setting up an account and earnings Likecoins is completely free, I thought I could just as well share my findings with you.

Below, you'll find more information on the Likecoin token and a step-by-step tutorial on how to set up your account and start earning in 5 minutes tops.

 

What is Likecoin?

Likecoin is an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum blockchain that was created with the idea of rewarding people for their creative work - whether this is visual art, written content, sound clips or any other sort of content - through a mechanism called Proof of Creativity.

Earning rewards is simple: Likecoin provides you with a customized like-button. When your visitors like your content, they can click that like-button and you will automatically earn Likecoin.

The Proof Of Creativity mechanism works in 2 ways:

• Each day, a set amount of Likecoins is distributed among all content creators. The more likes you get, the higher the percentage of this amount of Likecoins you will receive.

• People can reward your content directly by giving you a 'SuperLike', which means they send an amount straight out of their own Likecoin wallet to yours.

Likecoin As A Cryptocurrency

I already told you Likecoin is an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum blockchain.

According to Coinmarketcap, the token (LIKE) is currently trading for 0.00001324 ETH (= $0.003286).

The token can be traded on 3 exchanges: BitAsset, Liquid and Idex.

I know it's not likely you will become rich by using the Likecoin like button, but free money is free money, right?!

Free Likecoin

When you sign up for a free Likecoin account, you can claim 10 Likecoins for free instantly by performing a couple of easy tasks (watching the intro video, following the likecoins account on Twitter, etc.).

So why wait? Let's get started.

 

 

1 - MetaMask

To be able to receive and send Likecoin, you need to have the Metamask extension installed. Metamask is available for Chrome, Firefox, Opera and Brave.

If you are not familiar with MetaMask, watch the video below and follow the steps to install and set up the addon. Alternatively, you can follow the steps outlined in this tutorial.

2 - Creating Your Account

Go to https://like.co (This is my affiliate link. I would appreciate it if you would use it to sign up. in case you don't, just copy/paste the link text.)

Select your preferred sign up option. Inside the membership area, you can connect your other accounts too. (Although I couldn't get my Facebook account connected for some reason.)

 

 

Once you've allowed authorization, you can create your personal 'Liker-ID', enter your email address and upload the avatar of your choice.

Remember to check the checkbox next to 'I agree with the Privacy Policy' before you click the 'Confirm'-button.

 

 

The system will send you a verification email. Go find it in your mailbox and click the link inside to confirm your registration.

 

3 - Account Setup

Once you've confirmed your account, you'll be redirected to the members area.

In the top right corner, click the 'Menu' link.

 

A new menu will slide in from the right.

The first thing you need to do is link Metamask to your account. To do so, click 'Settings'.

Then click 'Bind Wallet'.

Make sure you are logged in to MetaMask before you click that link!!

A MetaMask popup window will appear, allowing you to sign the transaction needed to connect your MetaMask account with your LikeCoin account.

 

 

Click the 'Connect' button.

Your MetaMask wallet is now connected to your account.

 

The next step is to connect your social accounts.

Scroll down the page until you see 'Connections'.

Click the 'Connect' buttons next to the sites you want to connect your account with.

You can also connect your Likecoin account to your Medium and Flickr accounts.

At the bottom, you can add any other link. Since I couldn't connect my Facebook account, I added the link to my facebook page and - of course - the link to my SteemIt blog.

 

The links you add will appear underneath your personal 'like'-button, as shown in the example below.

Please note this button will only be generated for you when you use the LikeCoin Wordpress plugin, or paste the link in an article on Medium. If you want to add a LikeCoin rewards button to your SteemIt posts, you will need to use a custom image, or create a simple text link.

 

4 - Claim Your Free Likecoins

To claim your free bonus, scroll back up to the menu icon. This time, click on your username to be redirected to your profile page.

 

On your profile page, scroll down a little until you see 'Bonuses'.

 

Click each exclamation mark and complete the easy tasks to be eligible to receive your free LIKE tokens.

Once you've completed all task, the tokens will show up in your balance, at the top of the page.

 

5 - Create Your Reward Button/Link

Now you can go on and create the link or button people can use to reward you.

To create your reward button or link, click the 'Menu' icon, then click 'Earn Likecoin'.

You'll be redirected to a page that has the following button on it:

Click it.

On the next page, you get two options.

 

1 - If you're using Wordpress, you can install the free Likecoin Wordpress plugin. Full instructions on how to install it are provided on the site. After setting a couple of parameters, the button will automatically be added to the footer of your posts. (You can also choose to add it manually if you don't want it to show up on all posts.)

 

2 - You also get a personalized link. This link can be added to your posts. You can add it as a text link, but you can also create your own custom button.

Creating a custom button doesn't have to be complicated or time-consuming. If you take a look at @chekohler's blog, you'll find a perfect example of that. Here's how he adds the link to his posts:

 

However, if you like to play around with graphic design elements like I do, you can, of course, get creative and design your own button. I created mine (which you can see at the bottom of this post) with The Logo Creator 7. You can download the free version of the software and a template set HERE.

You can also use sites like Canva or the free BeFunky Graphic Designer to create your button.

 

6 - Add Your Reward Button/Link To Your Posts

Now you can add your text link or button to your post.

You do this like you add any other text link or linked image: by using the proper markdown code.

That's it. Your visitors can now reward you with Likecoins.

 

Let's Start Tipping Each Other

About 3 weeks ago, @chekohler came up with a great idea. In this post you can read about his proposal to start donating Likecoin to each other.

I thought why don't we all get in on the action and start tipping one another. The likecoin project has been almost exclusively run on medium and independent blogs so why not on steemit blogs?

While it won't be a whole lot extra in funds, every bit counts right? If we keep distributing LikeCoin between one another each day and make it a habit who knows if it might just take hold. Its also a great way for smaller stake steemians to get involved.

 

I like this idea. It won't buy us a Rolls Royce, but if Likecoin ever takes off, it'll be a nice little extra.

 

It only takes a couple of minutes to create your account and set up your button, so you've got nothing to lose and everything to gain! Let's start donating Likecoin to each other!
