1996 yılından itibaren 1.Fatih Terim dönemi başlayacaktır.Fatih Terim önce Olimpik Milli Takımda daha sonra A milli takımdaki başarısından sonra yıllarca kaptanlığını yaptığı Galatasaray'ın başına geçmişti.O zaman milli takımı beraber çalıştırdığı Rasim Kara ise Beşiktaşın başına geçti.Fatih Terimle beraber o efsane takım kurulmaya başlanmıştı.
Hagi gibi bir dünya devi imza atmıştı.O günleri hatırlıyorum da gazeteler durmadan bugün kü gibi dünya yıldızlarını Türkiye ye geliyor diye haber yaparak tirajlarını artırmak isterlerdi.Bana da arkadaşım Hagi Galatasaray ile anlaşacak dediği zaman hayal kurma Hagi kim Galatasaray kim demiştim . Çünkü bir önceki sene Hagi Barcelona da lig şampiyonu olarak 36 maç forma giymiş ve Romanya milli takımını dünya kupasında tek başına sırtlamıştı.Hani bugün Barcelona'dan Messi değilde Suarez i Galatasaray'ın transfer etmesi gibi bir olay düşünebiliriz.Fatih Terim in gelmesi Haginin katkıları yerli futbolcularının kalitesiyle o sene marşlardaki "dört sene üst üste şampiyon olduk..."cümlesinde dört senelik şampiyonluğun ilkini kazandı Galatasaray.Avrupa Kupalarında ise 2 tur da rakip Paris Germain di ilk maçı 4-2 kazanmamıza rağmen ikinci maçı 4-0 kaybederek eleniyorduk.Bu sene aslında Hagi ile birlikte Romanya ekolü de Galatasaraya yansımıştı.Flipescu Adrian İlie diğer Romanyalılardı.Daha sonraki sezon Popescu da katılacaktır.Tabii Adrian İlie gerçekten büyük bir futbolcu olduğunu kanıtlayacak Fenerbahçe de kardeşi Sabin İlie yi transfer edecektir.Galatasaray'ın gönlünde Van Gobbel'in yeride ayrıdır.Van Gobbel defansta bildiğiniz iri cüssesi ile dozer gibi defansta güven vermekteydi.
