The Mauritshuis

In the centre of Den Haag (The Hague), there is a great gem of a museum. The Mauritshuis is a museum dedicated to the paintings from the Golden Century of Holland. At the moment it has a permanent collection of around 200 paintings by the likes of Vermeer and Rembrandt.

It is a perfect size for an afternoon of curating and upvoting the best of Dutch Golden age paintings. At 2 relatively small floors (plus a small wedding for temporary exhibitions), you won't get sick of viewing endless artwork like you might do at the larger museums.

The museum is home to these two famous paintings (amongst others!). The Surgeons (Rembrandt) and The Girl with the Pearl Earring (Vermeer).

The Dutch Golden Age was a period around the 17 century during which The Netherlands was a leading economic and maritime power. During this time of economic and military dominance, the arts and sciences flourished. Famous scientists of the age (Huygens for example) and artists (Vermeer and Rembrandt for example) are still revered and recognised for their achievements in our modern age.

There are tours in both Dutch and English catered for either adults or children. These can be booked at the museum website. As an extra bit of information, if you are planning to visit many museums, you should definitely buy a museum card, which gives you free entry to about 800 museums in The Netherlands. You can always buy the card at participating museums.
