Shei-sensei Series #1 : Biology (Biodiversity and the Earth's Future…)

in #steemiteducation7 years ago (edited)

Hello Steemians!
Recently, I've been seeing a lot of posts related to education and I found them really interesting, so I decided to contribute something as well.

Teaching is technically my second course/major next to Nursing, so I thought I could impart my knowledge and experiences here in both fields. So, I'm starting another series called, "Shei-sensei Series".

SENSEI (先生 ;せんせい)means "teacher" in Japanese. And in this series, I'll try to post information related to Science (especially Biology since that's my major), English (I work as an ESL instructor now, so I'll post stuff to help you especially with grammar) and Medicine/Nursing. Ohh! I'm learning Japanese at the moment, so I might share what I learn as well. I hope you learn and enjoy my future posts!

As a starter, I'm going to share some part of the class I had when I had my practice teaching a couple years ago. I taught Biology to grade 8 students...

TOPIC: Biodiversity

The screenshot above is from the lesson plan I made...

BIODIVERSITY comes from the word "bio" which means life and "diversity" which means a range of different things. So basically, it includes all ecosystem, be it managed or unmanaged.

Managed Ecosystems are those that are inhabited and controlled by humans; whereas unmanaged ecosystems are those that are untouched (for example: forests, wetlands, etc)

There are three levels of biodiversity.

  • SPECIES DIVERSITY
  • it refers to the variety of life forms on earth.

    SOURCE

  • GENETIC DIVERSITY
  • it refers to the variety of genetic makeup or characteristics of an organism

    SOURCE

  • ECOSYSTEM DIVERSITY
  • it refers to the variations of habitats, communities in the planet

Next part of the module I used for this lesson was the introduction to various Plant and Animal Kingdoms, but let's skip that for now and focus more on Biodiversity and this next topic..

Let's talk about the Causes of Species Decline...

From the textbook we used in class, (Science Learners' Module by the Department of Education)the causes of species decline can be enumerated using the acronym "HIPPO".

H - Habitat Destruction

When the natural habitats of species are destroyed, they'll no longer be able to support the species living in that certain area. Some of the species move to another area, while some of them die. Thus, destroying the balance or displacing "biodiversity".

SOURCE

I - Invasion of Introduced Species

It happens when a certain organism tries to invade another territory. That organism will then spread and reproduce, which will then damage the area it invaded.

SOURCE

P - Population Increase

The growth of population can actually damage biodiversity. The population would need more space to take up in order to live, thus affecting the natural ecosystem.

SOURCE

P - POLLUTION

It has a harmful and poisonous effect in the environment, thus destroying biodiversity.

SOURCE

O - Overcollection or Overharvesting of Resources

This is also known as "Overexploitation". It refers to the over-usage of natural resources. We tend to use our natural resources without replacing them. In the long run, it will cause destruction or loss of the resources. Thus, destroying biodiversity.

These are some parts of the first module I taught to my grade 8 students before.. And now, let me end this post with the homework I gave them and some of my students' work.

Here are my students' works...

Sad, but true... isn't it?

Now, dear Steemians... what do you think we should do to help our mother earth survive? (^_^)

That's all for now...
Thanks a lot for dropping by!

I am really excited about this series you are starting! I am part of the @steemiteducation project. Thanks for using that tag, I may have missed this otherwise. The team will keep looking for these. We need as much valuable education content as possible!

Thank you very much and I'm pretty honored to receive this comment from you... :) I hope to impart more information related to the fields I mentioned on this post. :)

This series will be really really helpful for me. I have to learn all Science, English, Medicine and also Japanese in my future grades. This is a great opportunity for me Shei. I appreciate your work.
The things are well defined. And your students' homework is great. Thank you for sharing such useful content. :D

I'm really happy that this series will be of help to students like you, Chamu. <3 It's always my pleasure to help students like you... ^^ I know you're taking your education seriously, however be sure to enjoy as much as you could, too. Okay? :)

Yeah... I miss that class.. They're now Grade 10 students and most of them kept in touch with me... It makes my heart feel warm.. :)

Well that makes sure that you are a loving great teacher :D
I learn a lot of things here on Steemit while enjoying ^^

Awww... <3 Thanks Chamu... :D

Good niformation bast of luck @ tegoshei.

Thanks a lot.. ^^

this is sad we humans contributes on what's happening in the world right now, however there are some people who wants to change the world by spreading environmental awareness thru education.

Yes... if only every human tries to value and contribute sth to the environment, then it'll be a better place for all of us...

Wow, your article is very neat. Good placement for images and it's providing a good content too.
