Kindergarten & Weekend Art Ideas

Kindergarten & Weekend Art Ideas

Every year we try to incorporate as much art activities as possible. The main reason for this is that learners don't just sit behind books. That they have something fun to do, but unknowingly also assist in learning and development.

My son turned 5 in June, daughter 3 in March and our youngest 1 in June. But my kids needs to be stimulated a lot and they love being creative, so what better way than to have a lovely weekend with a lot of creative juices flowing.

Skills developed through art

  1. Develops creative thinking.
  2. Develops planning skills.
  3. Develops fine motor skills (cutting, shredding, painting, drawing)
  4. Develops decisions making skills.
  5. Develops mathematical skills (shapes etc.)
  6. Boost a learners confidence. (Especially if they can see what they are capable of and the praise they receive from their teachers)
  7. Develops visual-spatial skills.
  8. Develops perseverance. (When I start something I have to finish it.)
  9. Develops collaboration between learners.

So here are my 10 best art ideas

  1. Salt and glue art
Give each learner a bottle of runny glue, they then make a pattern with the glue. After that you or a learner throw salt on the glue. Let it sit a little while to dry. Use food coloring to paint the salt. It spreads just by tapping on certain places. This facinates the learners a lot.

  2. 3D line art
Let the learners trace their hands on a piece of paper. After this they can use different colors to draw lines. Start of by drawing hooped lines in the hand. Then draw the outside lines, but these must be straight. This will create a 3D effect of the hand.

  3. Umbrella and snail art
Paint and cut out a 3D umbrella and paste it on the one side of your page. Cut out a snail and paste it that it looks as if the snail sits under the umbrella. Use magazine papers and roll small balls to cover the snail's "house" (This was the only way my learners covered the snail.) They can then paste some glue under the snail and throw on some sand (Let it look as if the snail is sitting on the beach.)

  4. Bubble blowing art
I did a lot of bubble blowing art with my learners. This helps the mouth muscles to develop. At the beginning you can just let them blow bubbles on a page, but later on you can have them cut out a picture, put it on the page and blow the bubbles. When they then take of the picture it's outlines will stay on the page.

  5. 3D Strips Hot air balloon art
Let the learners cut pages into long strips. They then use it to create the air balloon. The basket can be made out of sticks. This takes a lot of planning from the learners side, because they can't just paste. They have to plan how long their paper strips must be and where they want to paste it.

  6. Paper fan art
Learners fold fan's with a piece of paper. And yes this can be nerve wrecking for the teacher because these little ones struggle to fold it right, but when they grasp it it is wonderful. With this they can make so many things. An umbrella, fish etc.

  7. Paper weaving
The teacher cut out little space where the paper can be weaved through. This looks great when you want to make a fish's scales.

  8. Toilet roll art
Luckily for living in a hostel, when needed we asked all the children to bring their empty toilet paper rolls. This makes amazing art projects. It can also be used for mathematics

  9. Egg holder art
This is another one off those articles that have a vast number of possibilities.

  10. *Pipe Cleaner art
The pipe cleaner can be used for mathematics, for languages but there are also a lot of ideas for art.

#Remember this qoute from Picasso and know that it doesn't matter if you think that the child's art piece isn't the best. In their eyes it is the most beautiful thing they have ever made.
