Human Body Series Part 2: Support System

In Part 1 we discussed our Cardiovascular system. Today we will be discussing our support system

Our support system consist of our skeletal system. This serves as our bodies framework. It consists of mainly the bones and the cartilages. We will also find connective tissue that holds all the bones and cartilages together. The connective tissue in return consist of ligaments and tendons.

Imagine how you would have looked without your skeletal system...

Something like this maybe.

We have over 200 bones that gives our body it's shape, form it also protects all our other systems. It also helps us with blood cell production.

The nervous system is a delicate system, which is mostly enclosed by bones, our skeleton. Eg. The skull protects the brain and the backbone protects the bone marrow.

The heart, which is part of the cardiovascular system is protected by the ribs. The ribs also protects the lungs which is part of the respiratory system.

The reproductive system is protected by the hip bones

Take note that our skeleton is called an endoskeleton because it is inside our body.

After reading the above information answer the following questions:

  1. What is a skeleton called that is inside a body?
  2. What is the purpose of our skeletal system?
  3. What two things does our skeletal system mainly consist of?
  4. What holds all the bones and cartilages together?
  5. What does the connective tissue consist of?
  6. What protects the brain?
  7. What protects the livers and kidneys?
  8. What protects the reproductive systems?

For the little ones, here is a song that the Bubble Guppies sang in one of there episodes about the skeletal system.

Fun song
