Monster Slime - (Halloween Activity and Science Experiment)
For those of you who are still trying to catch up with the year, let me tell you, we are already in October. Crazy right!? And you guest it, it's time to pull out the Halloween costumes and stock up on candy! In light of the somewhat ghastly (or ghostly) festivities that Halloween entails, I would like to spend the month of October bringing some educational Halloween activities to the table. These activities can be done at home as a family or in the classroom and will include an arrangement of science experiments, crafts, sensory play activities, and games. So keep a look out!
Let's Start Off With Some MONSTER SLIME!

What you will need:
- Kids who are ready to get messy
- Some patience for messy kids
- A bucket or large bowl
- Mixing spoon
- Liquid startch
- Food coloring of your choice
- Clear glue
Instructions:
- Add about half a cup of your glue to your bucket bowl and give it a quick mix. I recommend using clear glue to give the slim a translucent appearance, but you can use white liquid glue too, which will give a more solid color effect.
- Add about a tables spoon of food coloring. You can add glitter as well if you would like a sparkle effect. This also gives the slime a subtle texture if you are using the activity for sensory place (perhaps make a batch of normal slime and a more textured one for a difference in feel).
- Slowly pour in the liquid starch a little bit at a time, mixing in between. Add the starch until you are happy with the consistency.
Add some eyes to your slime to make it look like a gooey monster!

The Science Behind It
This activity can be used as an experiment to explain to students that when certain substance mix they create a chemical reaction, which forms a new substance altogether. In this case there is a chemical reaction that takes place between the liquid starch and the glue. This results in the squishy, squashy, eewie and gooey slime monster you now have in front of you!
There's More!
These slime monster make awesome gifts or party favors for birthday celebrations or Halloween festivities. Make this quick crafty item:

All you need is:
- Glass jars
- A variety of stick-on craft eyes
- Colored paper
Add the slime to the jars and use your imagination and creativity to make slime monsters in a jar. Since the year is moving so quickly, these cute critters make ideal stocking fillers too!
