Learn about energy, motion and force – Hovercraft Science Experiment

in #steemiteducation7 years ago

This experiment came to light when my toddler found a delight in balloons that were filled with air and then released, without sealing the air in. The balloon spiraling around the room left him in giggles and we spent most of the afternoon chasing the rubber “bird” around the house. Will he is still too young to wrap his little mind around the science behind this “trick”, he does understand that the game is a result of cause (blowing the balloon up with air) and effect (letting the balloon go and releasing the air).

If your kids or students are a bit older, you can take this simple activity to the next level and let’s say, pimp it up a little! Incorporate it into your next science lesson as a demonstration of how energy, motion and force work. I always say that kids learn best by having fun!

OK, I love this experiment for many reasons. One, the materials needed are cheap and easy to get hold of, secondly, it’s so easy to put together and last but not least, it keeps kids busy for hours on end (a mom’s dream).

What you will need:

  • Balloons
  • Old CDS (or a pack of cheap re-writables)
  • A hot glue gun (adult supervision required)
  • A nozzle from a dish soap bottle (or the likes, see image below)

Instructions:

  • Add glue to the bottom rim of your dish soap cap/nozzle and then quickly glue it on to the center of your disc, covering the hole.
  • Wait for the glue to set and cool.
  • Slip a balloon over the nozzle.
  • Blow the balloon up through the opening.
  • Close the cap/nozzle until you are ready to release your hovercraft.

When you are ready for action, place your invention on a flat surface and open the cap. Watch it as it hovers above its surface.

This fun science project works because the force of the air expelling from the balloon creates a cushion of air between the bottom of the cd and the surface it is on, allowing it to glide just barely resting above it. - https://www.livinglifeandlearning.com/hovercraft-science-experiment.html

I love these nifty little inventions, you really don’t need to stock up on toys for your kids, just open up their worlds to science and they will never have a dull moment.

Much love - @sweetpea
