Blaming Teachers: Education's Wrong Focus

Before I begin I want to point out that I believe that probably 90% of the teachers out there are really good people (who have my deepest sympathy)... individuals that go into the profession with the best of intentions because they genuinely care about kids. The university I attended began as a teachers college and their Education Dept is still the largest in the university. My views come from interacting with other students... all of whom had the highest of aspirations. Having said that, I can honestly say that teachers are NOT what's wrong with education... if they chose the curriculum it may be- but they do not.

Over the last several decades the overall focus of education has changed drastically, and for many reasons. Among them is that many parents, for one reason or another, have abdicated much of their responsibility placing it squarely on the shoulders of teachers. On the other side of the equation is the school administration who has shifted the focus away from education in favor of socializing children... in other words imposing a worldview that many parents (and teachers) find to be inimical to their own. Lamentably, teachers, no matter what their own values, are caught in the middle, between parents who have abdicated responsibility and an administration whose only goal is to socialize.

Many young teachers (if not most) come out of college laden with debt- what can they do? Their options are severely limited- toe the line, or work at Walmart. The failure of America's educational system isn't the fault of teachers, or an inability to teach, but for the most part, responsibility lies with the administration. Clearly some of the blame lies with the parents- it is the responsibility of the parent to prepare their child for school. Moreover, it is not the responsibility of the school to teach children about sex... which brings us to the other group of parents- those who stay involved.

This second group of parents are becoming increasingly frustrated by the sex oriented curriculum and angry at those teaching it... their anger, however, is misdirected. Teachers have little or no say about what they teach- or how they teach it, for that matter. Nor are they in any way responsible for what material is in school libraries. Recently, in New Jersey a group of parents has banded together to have a sexually explicit magazine banned from a Middle School. (see link)

How things have changed. After my wife and I split up my kids returned to public school (much to my chagrin). My youngest complained that she couldn't find a copy of Catcher in the Rye... or that she found it and they wouldn't let her check it out- or read it there. But sexually explicit material encouraging any form of sexuality is fine and readily available. I reiterate... the purpose of education is to educate- to provide children with marketable skills. As T.H. White wrote in The Once and Future King... "The purpose of education is knowledge- the purpose of knowledge is application." How can teachers teach, if they are told what to teach and how to teach it? Or perhaps a better question is, how can teachers teach children to think if they are not allowed to do so themselves? No wonder many of the more responsible parents are opting to homeschool leaving teachers to behave as glorified babysitters for the more lackluster students... Teachers of the world, you have my deepest respect and sympathy! (see link for homeschooling)

Sort:

Bolshewik indoctrination camps with exposure to pedophilia, child abuse, spying on parents and family & friends, forced medication and mind control to buy into the main stream lies.

No state has the right to 'educate' children.

You should read Adam Smith's Theory of Moral Sentiments... he's very specific about government run public indoctrination centers that teach the young values alien to parents. By the way, you should check this out... I'm no big fan of Josh Tolley, but Alexander Lawrence has some unique insights...

Most interesting! Thanks for sharing, Rich! The book is definately worth a read - also avail. in ebook formats, and buyers can set their own price.

Indeed the educational system is messed up and it is not the fault of the teachers. 1) Many parents no longer provide their children with good moral values and acceptable behaviors. Educations wear many hats and disciplinarian and babysitter are two of them. 2) The educational system has its marching orders from the federal government. Common Core has done more harm than good. Many teachers hands are tied. If schools want the candy money they need to oblige Daddy government. So they are dependent like a drug on the money. 3) For the past century our colleges and universities have been subtly influencing students in a socialistic almost communistic belief system. The Democratic party is today a socialist party. Consider how popular Sanders was and since the mid 1980's the communists had to find somewhere to go. Who is going to vote for a communist party? Well it sounds better relabeled Democrat. At any rate these students have been taught this socialistic dogma at the college level for generations. NOW they are teaching it to our youth at the elementary level - first graders. That is why many parents opt to home-school and why many home schoolers are under attack. It traces back to money. The education system is loosing some money when parents opt to home school. But YES teachers hands are tied. Sad. Thanks for the wonderful article my friend.

Thank you my friend!

That is so true. People spend so much time blaming teachers, because they're the closest representation of the system, for most of us. As a student, I'm not going to look higher up. If I find the class or the teacher to be boring and unfair, that's on him.
But you are right, we should look deeper, it's rarely the teacher's fault. I've been saying the same thing for a few years now. I have this rather idealistic view that if teachers wanted to change something, they could. but as I grow older, I am not so sure about this.
I never thought of it quite in the way of:

how can teachers teach children to think if they are not allowed to do so themselves?

Which to me, is a wonderful way of putting it. But it's the same idea. The problem is higher up the ladder, much higher.

The real culprits are the UN... The Treaty on the Rights of the Child in particular.

Rights of the Child....such a joke. So depressing.

It basically takes parental rights away in favor of the State... Hillary Clinton helped write it when her husband was pres.(big surprise there)

Thing is, you kind of expect that from people like Hillary Clinton....what's really troubling is that we don't seem to care, that the large majority of people has no problem with being stripped of their rights.

“The Catcher in the Rye” by J.D. Salinger is banned for profanity varying from minor swearing to levels as high as the F-word.

So that is why the fuckers banned it...

There's a lot worse in school libraries... My opinion is because it encourages independent thought!

many parents, for one reason or another, have abdicated much of their responsibility placing it squarely on the shoulders of teachers.

BZZZZZZZT....transmission error...

Most parents have had their authority undermined and given to the teachers. The parents still have the responsibility but no means to enforce it....

There..fixed it for you.

Thanks good job... However if you look in the inner cities you see the unfit bearing the more unfit and handing their responsibilities over to teachers (or anybody that will do it)

I have thought that only in 3rd world countrys such as Philippines having problem with education such as debt problem with teachers as well as children sex education issues.

America spends $700 Billion a year and kids can't pass simple tests. Money isn't the problem!

you and I both know that's an invalid comparison
the inner cities are dysfunctional. They were forced to be that way because of government policy.

in my opinion the inner cities are unfixable.
they should be bulldozed and the population dispersed.

You're a lot nicer than me... I'd just bulldoze them... why move the problems elsewhere, it isn't the building's fault!

in all truth you have a point.
Perhaps remove the children first...then bulldoze it?

Ahhhh...naw they grow up to breed!

it's the culture..not the kids.
get em OUT of that hell hole and they'll be ok.

Excellent and balanced look at the failure of our education system. We have the apathetic parents encouraging the overreaching teaching institutions. Both feel justified by their actions because of the actions of the other. Those who do not want their children to be exposed to social indoctrination that is contrary to their own beliefs are branded as intolerant, bigoted, hatemongers by the ever tolerant "my way or the highway" government supported institutions. Children are cajoled into believing their parents are liars or ignorant, even evil by those placed in charge of their education. What are we to do? Teach our children at home not to respect authority? But if we raise our children to obey those adults who are supposed to be caring for them, and they end up having an anti-parent agenda, how do we correct that? They label their beliefs as being tolerant, which by nature forces those holding alternative beliefs as intolerant. Some of this backlash is to be expected, because many have been so intolerant of the beliefs currently in vogue, that we can hardly expect, now that they are popular, for them to be accepting. It's scary to imagine how this is going to end.

Look at all the fiction books!
