Breaking the ice when teaching

During the course of my military career ive been in allot of classes, you name it there's a class on it.

The biggest problem with most of these classes is participation most of the time it's either they don't care or too shy to get involved for fear of embarrassment.

The best classes ive been in is when the teacher [aka Drill Sgt] involved a game of friendly competition, they split the room up into teams. In basic we had 3
Platoons, i was in 2nd plt, the teacher then picked a topic and we picked a person in our group was good at said topic. They introduced themselves and we encouraged them.

Everybody has a little competitive side to them so class participation pushed 95%

In the end we all had fun and learned more about each other and the teacher got what he needed taught.
