How to Raise Children that are not Spoilt, Lazy or Dishonest

in #steemiteducation7 years ago (edited)
In family life, every parent has high hopes that their children will make them proud and grow into individuals with positive qualities and characteristics. At the same time, many parents will do everything it takes to make their children happy, usually by giving them everything that they want. This, however, can be detrimental to their education and upbringing. These children often get used to living in comfort and take their spoils for granted. As a parent, we need to be tread cautiously in how much we allow our children to get away with and how much we spoil them.

Here are some tips on how to educate and raise children, to avoid spoiling them, and their futures :

(1.) Do not abide by a child’s every wish.

Loving your child does not mean that you need to obey their every wish. Children need to learn that you don’t just “get” stuff, you earn stuff. If we succumb to every whim or wish from a child, we will create a generation that is dependent and unmotivated. Encourage your children to take responsibility and work towards the things they want.

(2.) Allow space for exploration.

A child's curiosity about his world often makes them want to explore and as they get older they want to explore more freely. Out of concern and fear, parents often prevent their children from discovering things independently however. This encourages children to take extreme measures, usually by rebelling, to get their way and head out into the big wide world. Allow your children space to explore. Remind them of the dangers and ask them to be safe and wise in their actions, and then allow a little freedom, age appropriately of course.

(3.) Encourage honesty.

Open up channels of communication where your children feel safe enough to talk to you, without fearing your reaction or response. This way they are more likely to be honest with you at all times.

(4.) Avoid physical discipline.

Often, you as a parent feel angry or upset about your child's bad behavior, this is normal and happens all too often. You need to remain calm however, don’t allow your children to see that they got to you, and more importantly, do not react violently.

Reacting with physical violence will do more harm than good and will immediately close the doors of open and honest communication.

(5.)Give love and pay attention.

A child will feel the happiest when they are loved and given the time of day by their parents. Praise them when they do good and motivate them to try their best, all the while reminding them that it is ok to fall and fail, as long as you get right back up again.

The best gift you can give a child is your time ..

Being a parent is a noble duty and comes with great responsibility. Be the parents your child will be proud of. Educate and raise your child well, this will help them to have the bright and happy futures they deserve .
