Biology Experiment : How To Know Borax Content in Food

in #steemiteducation7 years ago

This is a unique biological experiment, borax is a salt content of Sodium Na2B4O7.10H2O which is often used in non-food industry such as paper, glass, wood preservative, antiseptic and many more. Borak is a toxic substance and very harmful to humans if consumed.

# Food Contains Borax Because in today's many foods that use borax, for that here we will learn to do simple biological experiments test the content of borax in food. Not hard to do, let's learn together below.

Tools and materials:

  1. Knife
  2. Sample of meatballs or other food
  3. Drop pipette
  4. Turmeric water
  5. Noodles
  6. Crackers
  7. Borax

Biological Trial Procedure:

Before we do the testing of borax on food, first we have to do is testing borax, how to dribble turmeric on borax. We wait a while then borak will be brownish red.

Let us do the same way to the meatball that we suspect contains borax. First meatballs crushed ago in the wind-air only a moment. Then we drop the meatball with turmeric water.

Wait a few minutes, approximately 5 minutes. Observe the color change. Do also the same way to foods that allegedly contain borax, and record the results of observation.

Conclusion Simple Biology Experiment:

Foodstuffs if dripped with turmeric water will experience a change of color to brownish red it is manifested if the food contains borax.

Why does the food turn brownish red? It is in because turmeric contains curcumin, while borax has alkaline properties which effect if we mix the borax with curcumin it will produce a new compound commonly called boro kurkumin which has a brownish red color.

So it was our discussion of simple biological experiments that can add science to us, may be useful

Sort:

This is really nice! Actually the borax may hydrolyze to boronic acid, and react with the carbonyl groups on turmeric, to give a dimeric complex which account for a bright red color

By the way, we had established a new tag #sciencepic for science pictures, and that would be really great to have more original photos from you!!!
Feel free to use the tag, you may have a look here to know more about it :D

Meanwhile, steemstem are holding a #sciencefair soon. Feel free to join if you have other interesting experiments to show :D

Ok..thanks you very much for your info to me..its great info thank..i "ll do like you suggest...

This is a very interesting post. Showing it to hubby when he gets back from school. He is also a science teacher.

Of course iam agree with you..that student can try it at home after they bought any foods. Thanks for you comment
