Cause You’ve got Personality

Lloyd Price sang:

“Walk, Talk, Smile, Charm, Love (with personality)... And plus you’ve got a great big heart.”

In Korea it is the end of the school year. The new school year begins in March. I teach fifth and sixth grade students English as a Second language in a public school. They will graduate and go to middle school soon so I did a funny personality quiz and letter writing class.

The personality quiz is based mostly on Eastern psychology but is a lot of fun. It was hard for the kids not to take the quiz too seriously. First I reviewed animal vocabulary and words to describe animals. Then I gave them this test with four questions. Try taking the test your self. Make a mental not or jot the answers somewhere. I will show the results and meaning of the test at the bottom of this post.

Personality worksheet

The kids wrote their answers on this worksheet. They still couldn't tell the meaning of the answers because the results were not explained.

If I explained the meaning of the results step by step the kids would go wild so I explained the meaning of the results after all the students finished writing.

If students finished early they helped their friends or shared their own ideas with their friends. Teaching in a multi level class has the challenge of some students taking longer to finish while other students get bored so I assign tasks to all the students.

What answers did you get?

Example:

    • Angry Tiger
    • Cute bunny rabbit
    • Wild Unicorn

  1. Put the animals in order from the one you like the most first.
Sheep, cow, horse, pig, tiger, etc.

  2. Give a description word for each object:
    DOG ------------ faithful
    CAT ------------- cuddly
    RAT ------------- cheesy
    COFFEE --------- addictive
    SEA ------------- wide open

  3. Name one person for each color. It is better to name people you actually know:
    YELLOW - - - - Chris
    RED - - - - - - - -Jenny
    GREEN - - - - - -Gonzo
    ORANGE - - - - Peter
    WHITE - - - - - Elizabeth
    PURPLE - - - - -Bob

Kids went wild at this point.

Our normally lethargic sixth graders were actually enjoying English class on a Monday morning. I had to remind them not to take this seriously. One boy chose the color red for his mom and was a little bit embarrassed but love can mean more than boy friend and girl friend love. Sometimes students wrote the name next to the color only because those kids were wearing that color at the moment. Usually the answers came out pretty close to true or at least it was a big laugh. It got pretty noisy so I asked the students to turn the paper over and write a letter to one friend and deliver the letter to the friend. After that we played UNO in groups for ten minutes. It was a great end of the year activity. I won't see those students again. They will go on to middle school but I don't think they will forget this class.

It is really cold but kids are having fun.

Looking in the mirror I see
A refection of me.
Looking from your eyes I see
Only part of me.
My eyes are turned to look
Outside my head
Where to go and what to do instead.

I see the hand in front of my face
I am blinded to my disgrace
The world of perception lies just a little ahead
Of what the eyes can perceive
Scattered back and forth inside my head
Searching for direction and identity
Gasping out an adolescent scream
At the reality inside of me

Unaware of who we are
Hours wasted nailed to fiberglass chairs of distraction and indoctrination
Unaware of the man inside.
Unaware of what makes them tick
Just watching the time go by
There is something more
Something deep inside
Something they cannot help but hide
For if he appears on the surface
then the mirror that holds us will be broken to pieces
With the mirror broken
How will we see reality?

Love,

@mineopoly Wonderful post to show a different way to engage your English students and create a memorable end of year learning experience for them. I agree, they're not going to forget this in a hurry :). It would be just as useful for someone teaching English not as a second language. Did you create the personality test?

Thank you for your kind comment @redwilles. I think these tests have their origin on Eastern philosophy. I was given a test like this orally at a coffee shop 20 years ago by a Korean person. I couldn't forget the test. The power point and worksheet I posted here are original works by @mineopoly. The ideas behind the test are ancient. @originalworks

I want to post all education posts @steemiteducation and would like to find out about the discord invite for @steemiteducation.

i did your test. that was soooo fun!
i will share my test3 results.
So....I am loyal (!)
My friend is pretty
My enemy is cute (!)
My future love life is strong (yeaaaaa!)
My life is wild (!)
very interesting!

Thanks a lot for sharing your test results.

  • I'm glad to meet a "loyal" follower.
  • It's good to have a preety friend and if your enemy is cute please be on your guard. watch out. She may tempt you.
  • Oh yeah!! Strong coffee. Great man @koskl
  • And a wild life to go!!
  • I think I will have to follow your blog as well.

This doesn't always work right for all people but it is always entertaining. It is kind of based on yin and yang. The light and the dark. It is also based on how we think. The first think that comes to mind is not always the thing we truly are but it is the hidden things like orange and the third place animal that come to show who we are.

This was a really cool activity. Now i wish i wouldve wrote down my answers. (Smoked a bowl before reading this so i was being lazy) LoL.

U sure sound like a great teacher! I would imagine it is a hard age to keep engaged, especially in a second language class. I could never teach children, it takes a special person to do so. Thank u for that.

Ohh, i also really enjoyed the poem. I have been thinking about trying poetry again, it has been over 15 years since i really sat down to write a poem. Crazy enough, i did find a notebook which was full of them when i was packing up my house.. i read thru them and it brought back a bunch of old memories, some good, some bad. Either way, it made me miss writing poems. I think u just may have helped inspired me to start again. 😉

Thank you. It is a lot of fun. Try one question on you fiance and see how she answers. Don't tell her the meaning until the end.

Teaching is what I do for half the day. The rest of the day I am bombarded by my own two kids. We live in a one bedroom apartment in Seoul so actually I don't know how I get by each day. Maybe it is the stress that keeps me alive and cool.

I have no idea what I am doing writing poetry I just write an idea and then make the words poetic and something comes up at the end. I would like to record some of the poems for second language learners but I can't get a quiet minute to record on @dsounds. A little encouragement from you will go a long way.

Please post some of those poems. I would love to read them.

Oh, thats a good idea! Maybe I'll do that with her later today.

Two kids in a one bedroom apartment? Wow, and I thought I had it rough with my fiance and two dogs in a 200 square foot studio (guest house) for a few months. The only time I get to myself is when I am working out or going to the bathroom lol. Doesn't sound to terrible but considering were living in a 2,500 sq ft home before this so it has definitely been an adjustment period!

Your poetry sounds great to me.. mine are pretty cheesy because they were from when I was young. Most of it was written between 18 -22 years old. I would share some of my older work with you but unfortunately I left all of it in a storage unit, but I will definitely be posting some new stuff on steemit here soon. :)

As far as finding time to do recordings..... Sounds like you might have to get creative to make that happen. I know it is cold there but maybe send the kids outside to play for a bit. Or drop them off at a movie so you can have a few hours to do the things you want to do.

I listen to a motivational speaker (Jocko Willink) and he says that all excuses are lies.. "You don't have time? thats a lie, you just aren't making it a priority.. You are too busy, LIE! Don't tell me if it was something you really wanted you couldn't make time. You don't have the right tools? thats a lie, you already know the people that have the right tools.. You are too old or too young to do something, sure sure your too old or too young... LIES." He says that "You need to get things done!" You don't really wanna hammer on a project? Then you should hammer on a project.. You don't wanna work out? Then you need to work out. Doing the things in life that are difficult is what will make you great. ;)

So I guess I'm saying be crafty! It's really all about planning, maybe you could do it at school either before or after your classes. Or send your kids to a movie or a friends house.. Do it in the hallway of your apartment or even in the bathroom if you have too.. Stop making excuses and get it done! ;) i hope this doesnt sound mean! lol, im doing my best to motivate you!
(sorry about the extremely long comment)

Excellent. Thank you very much. This is what Steemit is about... using what we have now not making a masterpiece in our dreams. My wife and one son just fell asleep so I will try a recording and post it. Not perfect but spur of the moment. I'll get better later. Start now!!

Thanks. I made the recording. I will post in less than 12 hours. Got to sleep now.

I love this! You really took time to build something fun for the kids to participate in and finish off the year strong. I think you are right - they won't soon forget this class and end of year work. You should be super proud!

Thank you very much. I am really glad to receive your encouraging comment. I plan on placing some post writing about education once a week. The kids really had a blast. Honestly there is a temptation just to show a movie and send them out the door on the last week of school but it is more interesting for me to challenge them to use what we learned in a creative and challenging way while having fun at the same time. I learned to teach the result part only after all 4 steps of the test are complete. If they are not complete then the results just make the kids distracted. We have about 25-30 kids per class and teach about 5 classes a day. I'm having a great time and think even if I was a whale on Steemit I would still be teaching in this school. The kids come from difficult family backgrounds compared to other schools in Seoul so they need the exposure to English and a Native Speaker as well as cultural and social activities. I'm really glad to share with you and to use any talent I have as a teacher to contribute to the community here.

I'm having a great time and think even if I was a whale on Steemit I would still be teaching in this school.

I respect u so much because of things like this!

I had no idea you where in Korea thats pretty cool don't forget that the #kr tag is blowing up and has a fair bit of steem flow through it.

Thanks for the hint. I have used the kr tag several times and they ignore me. Maybe because I'm american.I don't see any follower from kr on my posts. 한글말해도 대답 업서요. @kr-collegeclub 제가 kr tag 하면 왜 대답 없는가?

I already know your personality. LOL

Thanks Joe Cool
