4TH GRADE MATH - ROUNDING NUMBERS TO HUNDRED MILLIONS

Rounding Numbers to Hundred Millions

This post is continuation of our journey to explore rounding numbers. Today we will discuss rounding to nearest hundred Million. Yes, when a number is hundred million there are 9 digits which is quite a bit place value fuzz for 4th graders but with step step learning they should be able to grasp it easily.

They need to stay focus on the following two steps;

  1. Underlined the digit (Make sure to underline the right digit in the number based on the question). If you are asked to round the number to nearest thousand then underline the thousands digit and if you are asked to round the number to nearest hundred million then underline the hundred millions digit.
  2. After underlining the desired digit then look at the digit to its RIGHT. This is the key to rounding. If the digit at right is one from (0, 1, 2, 3, 4) then we keep the underlined digit and change all the digits to its right into ZEROES. This is known as rounding down.
  3. If the digit at right to underlined digit is 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 then ADD "1" to the underlined digit. Again change all the digits to the right of underlined digit to ZEROES. This is called rounding up.

Below are the activity sheets to further explore the concept. Please not both the sheets are perfect  8 x 11.5 paper size in PNG format and you should be able to print them by opening into the new window;
