4TH GRADE MATH - INTRODUCTION TO DECIMAL SYSTEM

Introduction to Decimal System

This lesson introduces students to decimals. The key is the knowledge of fractions. Decimals are fractions with denominator 10 or exponents of 10 such as 100, 1000 or 10000. By connecting fractions to decimals, students will build a deeper understanding of decimals.

Prior knowledge of place value and good understanding of fractions make decimal learning easy. We will start with very basic decimals using the base 10 (Denominator 10).

Now can you imagine writing a fraction when 3 strips of the rectangle are colored, 5 strips are colored? How about drawing a rectangle with 100 strips? 1000 strips?

the difficulty arises in bringing fractions to a common denominator

Yes, but if kids know about least common multiple (lcm) very well than they can convert fractions into common denominators easily!
