Once there was a cheerful tailor who always sang while he worked. Day and night, his sweet voice would fill the little room in the tower where he lived. Even the birds would stop just to listen to him, and the wind loved to hum along with his songs.

Everyone loved him, except for his grumpy neighbor. His neighbor was an old shoemaker who never seemed happy with his life. Day and night, as the tailor sang, the shoemaker would make audible side comments about how noisy his neighbor was. But the tailor didn't mind. He was very happy when he sang, and his work becomes much easier.

One day, the shoemaker could no longer stand his neighbor's singing. He decided to confront him once and for all to prove to him that singing doesn't help him with his work.

"I have a proposal," the shoemaker started, "give me ten thousand gowns in a week and I will leave you in peace. If you can't do it, then you'll have to be quiet for the rest of your life."

"B-but, ten thousand gowns? That's impossible!," the tailor demanded. But the shoemaker won't hear any of it.

"Ten thousand gowns. That's it," he finally said and left.

The tailor sat on his stool and cried. Singing was the only thing that had kept him happy, but what his neighbor asked of him was impossible. So he spent hours that night thinking of ways to do it, and eventually, he fell asleep.

The next day, he went on with his usual chores. He tidied up his work space and tried to sing, but he was so sad that he couldn't get any melody to come out of his throat. The birds wondered why the tailor was quiet, and went to ask the elves to see if they can do something about it. The little men agreed and went to visit the tailor.

Soon they found out about the shoemaker's demands. They felt sorry for the tailor, for they had also witnessed how happy he was whenever he sang. He was a good man and they knew that they had to help him.

Meanwhile, in his room, the shoemaker felt relieved of his neighbor's silence. He really despised his neighbor's voice, and how he made it feel like life was very easy for him. Serves him right, he thought. He worked well that day, knowing that he was not the only one who was struggling.

Days went by and the tailor still couldn't find it in his heart to sing. He thought that if he was not to sing for the rest of his life, he might as well get used to it. But on the fifth day, to his surprise, he woke up to find hundreds and hundreds of gowns  scattered across the floor. He looked at them in awe, for they were the finest gowns he had ever seen in his life. He was afraid to touch them, for they might disappear before his eyes. It was unbelievable!

Once he had regained his composure, he went next door to tell his neighbor that the deal was over. The shoemaker didn't believe him until he saw the gowns for himself. They were all made with only the best fabric, and were sewn precisely.

He took the gowns in his room and started counting them, leaving the tailor in his old, jolly self. The tailor started to sing again, quietly thanking whoever it was who had helped him.

The shoemaker was never able to count all of the gowns, and he had given up eventually. The tailor remained kind and humble despite of what had happened, and he continued singing until the end of his days.
