The role of parents in the habit of reading their children
The habit of reading is an arduous job for some children. It is probably one of the most difficult and at the same time most interesting processes for children to go through in their lives.
Children begin to get involved with reading generally during their school years. It is here where he experiences at an early stage everything related to reading and it is also here where the awakening of this so necessary and fascinating habit is achieved. It is convenient then, to know how we can as teachers and parents help in the reading process of the children. Here are some tips:
- 1) It is important to provide experiences to children: To learn to read it is necessary to have cultivated experiences. As with other skills, the child with the most experiences will be a good reader. A very positive technique is to take him for a walk and talk about what they see, also read books with varied information or also teach science, talk about animals, butterflies, birds, trees, among other elements present in nature, that be of interest and that motivates you to inquire through reading about those aspects.
- 2) Let the child learn according to his abilities: Before the child reads his first book, there are other things he must learn in advance, for example to follow instructions and know how to perform them, to know the meaning of some words, to recognize objects, to be able to identify what you observe, remember the topics discussed. These aspects are of great importance because they strengthen the reading process.
- 3) Help him: When the child does not know what meaning certain words have, tell them. Help him to practice his reading establishing a pleasant atmosphere for it, congratulate him for his effort and do not recriminate his performance, remember that it is a great effort on his part to start reading.
- 4) Make him feel safe: If the child feels good during reading and accepts himself as he is, he will have better results if he succeeds. Let him know that you support him, care and count on you.
- 5) Pay attention: It is very rewarding for the child who starts his reading process to see his parents interested in what he reads, so sit comfortably and listen patiently and complacently to what your child is reading, praise and encourage him.
- 6) Make sure the book is right: When your child starts reading, he or she will most likely come home with a school book and want to show it to you. Perhaps it will be difficult to show enthusiasm because you already know those books, but remember that this stage is important in the child's life, therefore, encourage him to read his favorite story, ask him questions about the characters and let him know that he likes the book . Later you will bring books that you have not read at school, however, your teacher will most likely make sure that it is suitable for your reading level, but if you think it is a book too difficult for the child, talk to the teacher about her concern. Well, it is to take into account that if the book is very difficult, the child will feel frustration or disappointment. You will learn much more if you practice your reading using books that are easy to use.
Before the child completes his elementary school, it is important that he has reading habits. This as expected is different for each child and therefore takes more time in some than in others. Parents interested in the education of their children, know that this is an inherent tool in the educational process and as such should be involved and interested in deepening skills related to reading.
Remember, too, that when children begin to read, a new and exciting world opens up. Try to make reading entertaining, fun, encourage sharing books with your classmates, share experiences, stories, ideas.
