Have you ever been on a team before? What does it feel like? Were you motivated or not with your work? A lot of factors is important in becoming a successful leader. Being a leader is no easy task. You get different complains as well as appreciation from the people around you. You are sometimes demotivated and other times, a group member burst your bubble or made your temper flare up. It is always a challenge on how you’ll be a decent head of the pack. A lot can be said about what should be a leader and what is a boss but only a few can recognize the difference and sometimes mix them up. Now, let’s all reflect on what is a leader and a boss so you know where do you stand.

Are You a Leader or a Boss?

1. Leaders teach and understand your work.

Have you experienced this in your workplace? Your supervisor or manager asked you to do a task that is unfamiliar to you, what did they do? A true leader first teaches his subordinate why and how to do it. They make sure you learn the ropes of your job with their help. A leader is like a teacher who gives discussions and tasks but explains and is familiar with it too. In our job, we sometimes have superiors that make us do a job but when you ask him about it he will simply tell you to do it without explaining anything. Turns out, he also doesn’t know how to do what he is asking from you.

Of course, there is a limitation to teaching. A leader should not spoon feed his subordinates and let them learn what you have taught them on their own.

2. Leaders exercise empathy and have high Emotional Quotient

Focusing on the subject matter rather than emotions can greatly affect the harmony in your community or organization. We are indeed a human being and are in touch with our emotions. A leader must have a high Emotional Quotient. This means if you’re a supervisor or manager or head of a group, you should talk to your subordinates empathically.

Being empathetic means sharing what someone feels but still gives sound advice for the person to follow. It is a high degree of understanding of a person’s emotion.

3. Leaders look beyond recognitions

A good leader doesn't mean you have all the positions and prestigious titles; it simply means you have a great influence anywhere and everywhere you go. You don't measure success based on plaques, medals or certificates.

4. Leaders prioritize legacies rather than competitors

Leaders perform based on giving a bright legacy for the future. They think about the long-term effects of their actions and decisions. Of course, they are aware of competition but still chooses to prioritize the legacy that will stay even if they are long gone.

5. Leaders want you to surpass their achievements

A true leader is not insecure and won't put his good soldier down. Nowadays, it is easier for someone to be envious of others. This is one of the biggest determinants whether you are a boss or a leader. A boss would want to always be your boss. They don't want you to grow and even resort to backlashing so to put out your confidence. Meanwhile, a leader will help you to achieve greater than what he already achieved. He sees your accomplishments as his and will never put you down in any way.

Aim to Be a Leader

Now that you know the difference between a leader and a boss, your way to becoming a leader is easier. Always aim to be a leader because it will give you utmost satisfaction and accomplishment that you have served other people well.

Hi, sis Em. I've been in a BPO industry for almost a decade and I can say that a leader and a boss are pretty opposing terms. Oftentimes, a boss is always associated with negative connotations who is more result-driven and more controlling. A leader, on the other hand, should be someone who leads the team with a vision/mission and focuses more on the overall development of the entire team. To become a leader, you need to be a good mentor first and a mentor can never be a boss :)

Yes, I agree with you sis but for some they take the meaning of the words "boss" and "leader" as one so that makes it confusing. Thanks for sharing your thoughts sis!
