Prohibitions and their value as an educational tool

Prohibitions and their value as an educational tool

Rules have to be. Children have to learn to find their way in society and in the world and that is not possible without rules and regulations. But it is precisely here that less is more and prohibitions that are pronounced should always be as plausible as possible for the child.

Children are pioneers and discoverers, they have to be to know the world. In highly civilized and regulated societies, parents can not always give free rein to the little ones' joy of discovery. Rules and regulations determine the daily life of the child and should control his behavior. However, one must not forget that the more prohibitions one imposes on a child, the more one inhibits one's freedom of movement - both physically and mentally - and the more one also brakes the development potential. In addition, prohibitions are provoking resistance and often cause more trouble than relaxation.

Appeal to the childlike insight

When parents pronounce a ban, you should always try to explain to the child why this ban is needed. At a time when the uncompromising authority of parents was being promoted as the only true means of education, it was not common. Today, the pedagogy has written the free development of the child on the flags and more and more parents want to implement this educational goal.

A child who understands why a rule or prohibition is pronounced will be much less vehemently opposed. Bringing the rule into a personal context, instead of throwing it into the room as an authoritarian prohibition, the chance of being reliably respected is far greater: "It bothers me when you hear loud music at night, so I can not sleep. "is far more communicative than a succinct" You can not hear loud music at night! "

No more prohibitions than necessary

Basically, one should be sparing with prohibitions. However, if they are pronounced, attention must be paid consistently to compliance. In addition to the resistance caused by too many prohibitions, they can also be interpreted by the children as a rejection of their person. Especially small children can take a "no" very personally.

When children are constantly being confronted with the prohibition of doing things they are doing, it is bad for self-esteem and, in addition, leads to a blunting. Children have needs and even though parents sometimes do not understand them, they should respect them as much as possible and not constantly suppress them by prohibitions.

Rules for prohibitions

For children to understand and accept prohibitions, a few points must be noted:

  • Only pronounce prohibitions that are important to you as well.
  • Do not use prohibitions as punishment for "wrongdoing" your child.
  • Talking and acting must be in harmony, otherwise you confuse your child.
  • Formulate prohibitions clearly and understandably, they serve as a clue to the children for appropriate behavior.
  • Make sure that you enforce bans once established.
  • If you can not assert yourself with your child and override your orders over and over again, you can assume that you have at least ignored some of these prohibition principles.

Children who trust their parents will follow the rules more than children who feel they can not rely on their father and mother. Trust is created through love, understanding and patience and not least through respect for the child's opinion and needs. When such a parent-child relationship is created, children accept the parents as competent and more easily bow to parental rules and precepts without pressure.
