What Is The Impact of Deforestation On Education in Aceh?

in #steemiteducation7 years ago (edited)

In recent years, many citizens and irresponsible people have destroyed protected forests by cutting down trees for a variety of reasons. Illegal logging by those seeking high quality timber in valuable forest areas have contributed to the largest amounts of destruction of precious forests.

With illegal logging a problem, the protected forests where I live in the Aceh region look increasingly bare. Protected forest areas have been established by the government and other interest groups who want them preserved. Forests are an important part of the world’s ecosystems and help various natural life support systems. Forests help to prevent floods, erosion, and maintain soil fertility. Forests also produce oxygen needed by humans and other creatures to breathe. When air pollution is a problem, forests full of trees and plants help decrease the impact of chemicals being released into the air.

If forests are cut down then there will be repercussions. Rain will erode the soil by causing water streams. Erosion can lead to natural disasters like floods and landslides. Floods and landslides are serious problems we face today in my region of Aceh.

In recent days I see others from my home of Aceh sharing images of flooding throughout the area. Flooding is happening because of high rates of rainfall in the past few days. The rain causes water to pool along the road and causes flash floods everywhere.

The recent flooding has had negative impacts on local schools in Aceh who are holding testing days simultaneously. It has been difficult and extremely uncomfortable for students and teachers to travel to schools. Students are often confused preparing for their studies because their books and clothing are damaged due to floodwaters. Mentally students are unprepared for school and their exams. They don’t have the support and tools to study.

Teachers are inconvenienced by having to hold remedial exams to make up for students' declining performances and absences during the rainy season. The principals of the school feel panicked with disappointing test results that do not reach the target value of the schools. Guardians of students also are an impacted because they have to provide new learning equipment for their kids when books, paper, and other tools are destroyed in the floods.

Overall, deforestation is a huge problem where I live. Humans and the cities here are harmed due to floods caused by the loss of precious trees and forests. When nature is destroyed it throws life out of balance and there are negative results like floods. Currently, our schools are disrupted and students and teachers are struggling to deal with the rains and floods. More needs to be done to protect forests and stop illegal logging.
