HF20 Is Looking Good; Just Need Some Patience...

in #steemit6 years ago

Today I'm going to take it easy on Steemit. The hard-fork caused quite some panic in the Discord Channels, as we couldn't post, vote, flag or claim rewards anymore.

This was a hard-fork that aims to solve some of the more fundamental weaknesses of the blockchain though, so this was always going to be a difficult one. The reason of our temporary inability to interact on the blockchain is the move from Voting Power (VP) and Bandwidth to Mana and Recourse Credits (RC). To combat different ways the former were misused, they're now being calculated differently. To transfer from the old to the new, the blockchain will need to gradually re-balance itself. This is, in very broad strokes, what I have been able to distill from the several discussions I had on Discord last night and this morning; I'm certainly no expert on this!

One of the things you'll notice right away is that rewards will be payed out in Steem Power (SP) and Steem Based Dollars (SBD) again; as it was before the SBD debt-balance got all screwed up. And that the first vote you did or will do after the hard-fork will drop your VP, or mana, to 20%. We will have to let that regenerate over the next days to where it was before; this is all part of the rebalancing-act.

So far everything looks to be going alright. The Steemit community once again shows how united it is: the panic I spoke of was short-lived. Immediately some of the witnesses and other technically well informed steemians began going through all steemit-channels on Discord to provide updates and explanations about the temporary halt on the blockchain. Thanks so much for that! Especially @crimsonclad, who really was in almost all channels at once reassuring people needs to be mentioned here :-)

Let this also be a reminder to all of us about how important good, community-minded witnesses are. If you haven't already, please take some time to get to know something about them and cast your votes (you have 30 of them) for the ones you trust best with the future of steemit. Of course your first vote should be for @helpie; just click the link at the bottom of all my posts :-) And take this time of relative tranquility on the blockchain to take a break from it; I know I will!

All things considered, I think we'll be better of with this new update. And it's good to see that efforts are being made to make the steemit experience a better and more honest one. Of course, only time will tell for sure, and we'll have to wait to see how the effects on user behavior will pan out, but I'm positive and confident.

If you want to check your mana and RC, you can go to: steemd.com/@your_steemit_name

And remember; it could be a couple of days still until everything is "back to normal", so don't be too panicked if a post or vote doesn't go through on the first try and wait a while to try again. While I'm writing this, my VP is regenerating, so I won't be able to upvote for a day or two, as will many of you probably; we'll all just have to be patient. A lot of the curation services will be down for a couple of days too, as their mana needs to recover as well. We already heard from @c-squared, @curie and @qurator that they need time to recover, and more will follow surely; again I'm sure they'll be back before you know it :-)

If you have something like SteemPlus, you'll see the new mana and RC data already. In fact, there's a good explanation by them: Welcome to HF20! Get your Voting Mana and RC Mana from SteemPlus!. They also have rescheduled their voting activities to next week. It's going to be a couple of relatively quit days here...

I'll have to leave it here for today, dear reader. Tomorrow I'll be back and will be able to spend some more time actually writing a post ;-) I hope you'll be back then too, on a somewhat better balanced blockchain :-) Until then, stay patient and keep steeming!
