With Great Power....

With great Power comes great Responsibility

The brilliant concept of Steemit is that Steemians themselves are the moderators on the platform. The concept is to get as much quality content on the Steemint as possible. When users try to abuse the reward pool by posting low quality content or plagiarized articles they will be moderated by their peers who can use the flag to downvote these posts or comments.
The pending rewards of the downvoted post is then returned to the reward pool so that real contributors can reap the benefits.

If we all follow the simple rules than we all benefit. High quality content ups the value of the platform which will lead to higher rewards for everyone.

The flag is a powerful tool in fighting abuse and unwanted content (like plagiarism). However the flag is also used as a weapon by some to settle arguments something I like to call opinion flagging.
In this case it isn’t about the quality of the post but rather about the message the author is trying to convey.

Someone might write about a topic others have strong feelings about and express a different opinion on the subject than yours. You might disagree with the author but that is not a reason for a downvote.
This is not facebook or Youtube...If you want to "dislike" a post because you don’t agree with the topic or don't like the authors ideas then my suggestion is stick with the likes of Facebook and Twitter. An author can write (or vlog) a brilliant piece about something you might not agree with but that doesn’t mean that the post isn’t good. You have to be objective and if you want have a discussion with the author, guess what?.....That is what the comment section is for, here you can engage with the author in healthy discussion about his post. Who knows? This might give you some new insights into the matter.

Another misuse of the flag when the downvote is used for “alleged” misconduct. Now in some cases the misconduct may be justified but it becomes a problem when someone tries to enforce his own rules and tell others what to do and what not to do on the platform.
Steemit has a lot of mechanics that can be used to your own advantage, for example......you can selfvote, you can buy votes from voting bots. It is debatable whether this is right or wrong but it is my opinion that Steemit intentionally created a non-restricting environment because they believed that the community would make sure that everyone would play by the rules and that anything frowned upon would be struck down by the multitude.

The problem however is that not everyone on Steemit is equal, one’s power and influence is decided by his or her Steem Power. The more Steem Power you have, the more you are able influence those around you.
People look up to whales, because of their success but also for the power that they can wield.
With this power however also comes responsibility. As far as I am concerned whales have the responsibility to right the wrongs committed on the platform. Most whales have been on Steemit for a long time and know exactly what is good for the platform and what is not.

So when a whale starts acting out and tries to enforce his/her own rules upon minnows, I would expect that the "Big Guns" do something about it. Steemit will not attract users if bullies are left running the place, this will only scare people away. Steemit needs positive stories and not negative ones if we want to continue to grow.

Thanks for this article @xervantes!

@grumpycat has enormous sp and is able to give his own crappy comments $165 upvotes, or to strip someone of their rewards at whim — and he does both.

Please come and read my article, and the comments to it

“The Emperor Has No Clothes”

@grumpycat is seeking to extort honest steemians and to silence free speech amongst us. Come! Flag his ass! Seek him out and shut him down. This disgusting and hypocritical behaviour must stop.

I have a better idea for fighting the cat, I will run it by the #thealliance members, I'll keep you posted.

On the whole, we have more good than bad here. Sure, there are some pockets of abuse here and there... I am certainly not dismissing that.

But there is no "they" in a decentralized ecosystem who's going to come along and fix things; WE have to be the "them" we rely on. We can look to whales... but maybe who we need to look to are the regular folks who have worked their way through the system and who are now "big" enough to drop a few flags on spammers and scammers.

It's true there is power in numbers but we will have to band together to make it work but a little backup would be nice.

You're right that whales have the power here on Steemit. It's all going pretty well now, but we're really at their whims and can only hope that they are benevolent.

I do worry about the future and what will happen when even bigger whales buy in. It almost seems like you could buy power on here, which doesn't bode too well for the future :-/

Actually it is already happening, just read the post by @thedamus!

No Problem, I've got your back. This is Steemit and no-one should tell us what bots to use or not while raping the reward pools themselves. It's like Robin Hood stealing from the rich and the poor and telling everyone that he is doing a good deed.

...and meanwhile he is pocketing it all!

I'll tell you, that is one thing that drives me crazy about reddit - getting a bunch of downvotes not because of abuse, but simply because people disagree with the opinion. You don't like the opinion, of course don't upvote it. But a group jumping on to downvote to bury the opinion is definitely bullying.

You should check out the Orville episode called “Majority Rule” it is a hilarious episode about a society based on upvotes and downvotes. Apparently people find it easier to push a button to express their disagreement than to engage the author in the comment section. I mean you can always agree to disagree. The whole flagging idea of Steemit is based around the control of quality of posts. Reddit is different in that respect and be quite brutal.

Haven't watched Orville yet. I've heard good things, but I was never a huge Star Trek fan, so I was afraid some of the humor and love would be lost on me.

Thought this post was pretty splendiferous
so it has been included in
the latest issue of 'Notes'.
Pop over and see what the fam is up to!

It is reflection of the real world - power can be bought as well as be misused. The instances that we have been observing, as mute spectators, has brought home the fact no matter how decentralized a system is, there will be a wanton misuse of power.

The vast majority of those who have power look away while flag wars usurp the resources in the reward pool.

Unfortunately this may continue indefinitely, tarnishing the image of Steemit - I am sure a lot of potential bloggers who planned to create blogs on this platform must have turned away after seeing the ugly circus going on every single day, prominently displayed on the trending page.

Great post - you have spoken your mind out well!

Thank you @maxabit. When I joined Steemit the thing that made me love it was how friendly the community was. Everybody was helping and supporting each other. It pains me to see all these whale wars and flag wars going on while we have something so amazing that we are a part of. I remember last year that sometimes whales stepped in to settle disputes but now it looks like they are turning a blind eye.
I still have high hopes for Steemit but these whales must realize that if Steemit's image is damaged that we all suffer.

I agree - I too joined for the same.

Just to add here that many have expressed their opinion that at least one of the flag warriors is perhaps not an individual but a group or company that is posting and doing flag wars in a planned manner.

This way each of their posts, several each day, earns hundreds of SBDs which in turn is thousands in any valued currency. So to think of the flag wars as between individuals is rather naive on our part, and I hope the main stakeholders/ developers of Steemit have planned to do something concrete like maybe trace the IPs of these folks and go after them.
