You Want The Playboy Bunny and The Porn Star On SteemIt?

in #steemit8 years ago

It is good for traffic and users on the site and it might add value, I have no problem with what others do.  I do have one thought.  Can we keep the "thumbnail" pictures somewhat respectable?  I don't want to have to hide my computer or feel funny about surfing SteemIt?  (For the most part they have been so far)

Some people have kids and family around.  I would prefer not to make SteemIt something I have to open with caution.

What are your thoughts?  I want SteemIt to be a place of freedom, but also respect.

A good solution would be to be able to individually filter the NSFW tag, so you have to turn it on to view; otherwise it's off by default.

I believe this was suggested some time ago; however without going all facebooky on people, you can't force them to add that tag to their post.

True, but if there is a solution and they aren't tagged, I would support flagging. This from a flag hater. ;)

How about a nsfw flag. The interface can judge from a stake weight sum and user sets a threshold for hiding it. It incurs no cost but decays fast like voting power, to stop attempts to use it as a censorship tool. And SFW flag next to it that counts the other way.

I think it would be interesting to see how it gets used. Is fakenews and pizzagate nsfw? I think so, sometimes the images are very disturbing. The images could be hidden instead and just the headline and first line, rather than completely hidden at option.

It's funny, because since writing my reply, my daughter came into the room just as I spotted an nsfw post. Although the thumbnail was a neutral headshot.

It could become a problem...

Exactly, I don't want to feel weird opening SteemIt.

This post has been ranked within the top 50 most undervalued posts in the first half of Dec 04. We estimate that this post is undervalued by $6.67 as compared to a scenario in which every voter had an equal say.

See the full rankings and details in The Daily Tribune: Dec 04 - Part I. You can also read about some of our methodology, data analysis and technical details in our initial post.

Good point. It's going to happen . It is best we deal with thumbnails in a tactiful way. Not sure if it can be like some sites where its blurred with a 18 + warning and saying 'click here'.

I think we might have to address how it is displayed in the US there are even legalities around it. I am not a prude, but I don't love seeing naked butts at 7 am either. lol. :)

I was scrolling through Steemit posts on my phone the other day while at a restaurant, and one of the posts was a video of a naked girl swimming in the water and farting bubbles. I had to quickly close it before someone thought I was intending to look at that type of thing in public, lol.

Exactly my point. LOL.

[Edit] Moved comment to the thread below. Sorry, I accidentally replied to the wrong part of the thread.

Thank you! Good information.

what you don't like naked butts at 7 am lol :P

Fuck off porn. Go somewhere else for that. Censorship? Fallacy. Censorship is valid. You censor shit all the time in society as people who agree to go in a certain direction. We don't accept nudity in public. We don't accept child porn in general either. Censorship is bad? No. It's reality. The community chooses where it wants to go.

Do we want Steemit to become a porn hub? Is that the respect, visibility and popularity that Steemit wants to be known for? Another porn site? Whatever we feed, will grow. Porn, sports picking gambling crap, we are all feeding what the platform will become. How about making Steemit into a quality place for content to be created and acquired, not some low consciousness pleasure shithole for people who can't think above their dick or pussy while they are on a website. They just have to turn Steemit into shit like other shithole porn on the net.

Grow up people. Evolve consciousness. If you think Steemit is going to be a social media success by focusing on simply gaining user quantity from anywhere on the net, you are mistaken and don't know how to attract and create a quality name and brand for real people to come and make something out of this place. We need real content creators that help humanity, not porn degenerate shit.

I have this feeling those who want porn are going to bring it, so I am just hoping we can make it so everyone doesn't have to see it. Looking for middle ground. I think we can find it.

And some people try to bring porn into facebook because they want it, and others don't. We need an overall direction and target audience. Steemit has no specific direction it wants to go in for what it wants to be, who it wants to target as an audience to build a platform around. Steemit, seems to want to cater to everyone, and that make it cater to no one in particular. There is no target audience when you don't have a target, when your target is anyone. This is operating without a real direction to start in, and is essentially operating rudderless, incapable of going in a direction because there is no direction chosen to head towards.

I have to agree with you krnel. It all depends on what people want Steemit to become. In my opinion this might just not the place for it. Although it sells, porn can be bad for business.

To me, this place is either censored, or it is not. If Steemit is an uncensored forum, then it isn't reasonable to expect posters to self-censor out of respect for those who want to view the site at work or with family around. Porn is coming to Steemit, there just isn't any way around it.

There are plenty of ways to allow for "sections" or places to view porn on "SteemIt" without putting it in everyone's face. :) I bet we will figure it out.

The fix is super-easy. I don't know why the Steemit admins haven't implemented it yet. All that needs to be done is add a checkbox to the posting form for adult content. Then a second checkbox in users settings to determine if the users want to see adult content. If a post is made with adult content and isn't tagged as such, it will be flagged by the users.

See my comment above - User configurable filtering based on also tagging by users - if the author sets it then it is locked that way, but other users can vote it nsfw and users set thresholds and image hiding functions.

Designating successors for accounts and potentially having child accounts are two definite needs, this would be a good step. Would be censors have to invest a lot of money to distort the threshold below the average user's definition.

Leaving this to flagging is worse than an optional filter. It is a natural extension of muting and low rep hiding. Sure if it is some nasty rotten.com style image, flag it, but a boob would not be nearly so nsfw, and simply being given a subjective rating for filter users... disable it and little is affected for those who don't mind seeing a little sometimes. Rankings allow users to set a threshold they define in the interface.

I'm actually not a fan at all of tagging content to suit the prudes and the parents. If a site is going to brand itself as an uncensored forum, then people get what they deserve if they browse it in a workplace that finds the content offensive. Neither is the site responsible for anyone's kids. If a parent allows their children to have unrestricted access to the internet, that is on the parents. It's not on me to shield their childrens' eyes from the things adults do.

I mostly agree, but I liked your checkbox solution. After that it is up to everyone to handle it. :)

This is a great suggestion! 😊 Then you would have the option to choose whether you want to look at "butts" or not!

People for a Butt free life! Kidding!

True but I certainly agree with you. I can't stomach a butt in the morning:)

Hmmmm
IMO we really don't need porn here...heck even Playboy stopped putting nudity in lol. I don,t so much mind there being adult oriented material here on Steemit but I think it should be limited to user generated content and let the users decide if they want to view it or filter it.
What we don't need are 100 s of video porn channels playing pirated copyrighted movies and clips they downloaded from the web or channels with live nudity and naughty chat. Also there is the concern of underage participation on both ends....what happens when your underage child posts adult pictures of themselves or someone else does, on a block chain no less and what would be Steemit's liability if it occurs ??

The funny part of the whole thing, is the block chain doesn't even handle graphics, and not video. :) lol

Good idea, but who gets to decide what is the right balance between freedom and censorship?

Isn't that the never answered question. I don't pretend to have all of the answers.

The ideal solution is to give users the right/ability to filter out NSFW content if they don't want to see it. This would rely on posters properly using the #nsfw tag, as well as Steemit.com properly displaying things based on the tag as well as the viewing user's preferences. With these two things though, it is a very solvable problem.

Yes, we just need to be clear in that I have no problem with it, it isn't always a good time to in a person's interest to see it. :)

Here is the GitHub issue for the Steemit.com change
https://github.com/steemit/steemit.com/issues/406

Users tagging #nsfw properly is something the community currently requires. If NSFW posts (especially with inappropriate thumbnails) are not tagged, the community should be flagging them.

(Sorry for the confusion - I moved my comment from above down to here - I had accidentally replied to the wrong thread before)

Approved by Walden! :)
