Moving Facebook Groups to SteemIt with a SMT

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

 It is only a baby idea, but it could grow.  Help me think this through. . .

Some friends and I have a Facebook Page that currently has 5k members, maybe 1k active daily.   Certainly not a large group.  I am sure I am not the only one who belongs to a Private Group of some sort.

Let's talk about moving this group this page to SteemIt.

This group is adult only, with a focus of drawn out debates on issues ranging from local to International.  All speech is allowed the only exception is threats.    (We would get flagged pretty quickly on mainstream SteemIt.)

An idea I am tossing around is to partner with someone to create a User Interface (App) it could look exactly the same or very close as SteemIt, but would need to be a "Private Group".   We only want to talk with people who have "Agreed" to our rules.

The benefit to the users of the group:

  • We don't have to fight with Facebook all of the time.  Some of us get temporary bans from Facebook pretty often.  We know it is just a matter of time before the group gets closed down.  Because consenting adults shouldn't be allowed to make a mutual decision to have difficult conversations with out all the political correctness.
  • "Yet unnamed Influence Tokens that would be monetized"  (SMTs)
  • Education and a beginning in digital tokens should they wish to explore it.

Benefits to SteemIt:

  • Another App
  • A working model for moving groups and discussions happening on other platforms to SteemIt.
  • This group is solidly Middle Class - USA.  Meaning although not big investors, people with some disposable income and who are likely already investing in something.
  • Mainstream visibility.  It is all about the eye-balls
  • In this specific case these are people who love to engage and who are used to in-depth discussions on the Internet.  They feel stifled by Facebook..  These would be good people to bring to SteemIt and introduce to Steem.

Due to this being a relatively small group of people, I can fund the SMTs.  Would I create them, issue them and buy them back to distribute?  Looking to brainstorm what a reasonable investment amount is and map a plan for others to bring groups and others to a decentralized free speech zone.

What do you think?  Is it worth Brain Storming?  If we can come up with a reasonable plan it might help others to move, and thus monetize their interests on SteemIt while enjoying less government overview, and freer speech and anonymity.

If you are curious about the group I talked about it once in a post.  For the sake of this post details aren't necessary, just the concept of why and now a discussion on how.

Moving Facebook to SteemIt one group at a time...

Let's talk about it..

@whatsup

Sort:

Wouldn't it boil back down to just roping people in to Steemit and enticing them?

I mean, if they're innately skeptical... it wouldn't work right?

SteemIt doesn't have any way to allow a group of people to communicate within a set of agreed upon terms. Although that might change with communities.

Agreed with @whatsup. Most of the user use discord app where there are different channels. Then there is steem.chat. But what's under discussion here is required and missing in Steemit.

If we have our own groups perhaps it may be rather clique ish

This is pretty much what communities are; and that should be included in Steemit at some point this or next year. I don't think it would be necessary to build a new client for the STEEM blockchain to move your group over from FB.

That said, what do you hope to accomplish with SMTs?

And also, keep in mind Steemit still has a deep learning curve and nobody makes any money until they get popular or invest in SP, or both..

I look at SMTs as something like "stamps" at the grocery store; and they try to get your business by offering gifts you will receive once you have filled your collection book with stamps. Here is your free sand candle!

You might give 5000 SMT to each new user for signing up to your group. If the tokens became valuable over time, it might encourage users to sign up for your group (and agree to your rules) in favor of other groups with less valuable (or no) member tokens.
But since they have no idea what your token or SMT is to begin with; it could be a hard sell... unless they are Steemit literate already.

Also like air miles from your credit card company; they want you to put all your purchases on their card and are willing to pay you in air miles to do so; which they purchase from airlines.

@whatsup,
It's a great idea indeed! But you are going to issue a token if you wish to build it on SMT! My question is "Are you planing to do some kind of token and make financial benefits through it?"

Cheers~

In the beginning, the token wouldn't hold a lot of value, but if the community grew.. It would at least have a speculation value.

@whatsup,
That means users can make profit by using it! This is a great concept, but you should find a developer who can build this application! Actually it looks like a kind of another STEEMIT :D If you can find a good development team, then this concept can fine tune very easily!

Cheers~

Awesome idea, if my pockets were deeper I'd help fund it. As for a Dev, maybe jump on discord and toss it around.

It's a great idea to create a new application and thereby motivate people to express themselves. Also it will be very useful for our ecosystem as a whole. I think it's worth doing and implementing your idea! Thank you @whatsup

@whatsup - A good idea to bring FB Groups into STEEM platform. Nice brain storming session Ma'm..... I have no idea how SMT can support your concept, so I'm listening Ma'm.....

+W+ [UpVoted & ReSteemed]

As far as it gives benefit to the Steemit community, it's worth-supporting. Can you put more light on it? @whatsup?

I am sure there are more people who want to make something similar to FB using SMT's. Though maybe peerity.io might already be what you are looking for (still has to be released).

Good thinking buddy.... this is super great :)

Attract active users from their group on Stimet great idea. Only how to do it? There are a lot of options. You need to think about what people would have not only registered, but also started to actively participate. I think this is difficult, I know for myself it's hard to understand everything at once. I think that out of 100% there will be 30 percent of all ..
