OMG Fork 19 : Abort!
I'd be lying if I said I knew much about the inner workings of the systems that allow us to create content, make money and build community here at steemit. But if our goal is to create abundance here, I see something very wrong with this hardfork. It took me a while to figure it out but after hearing from a few who know much more than me and playing it out in my mind.....I hope this gets rolled back, at least half of it.
The elimination of exponential voting power seems great to me. It should create an opportunity to fix the distribution of wealth. What it does for the price of steem and the activity of whales, I'm not sure, I would like to hear some input from those more knowledgeable than me.
The 10 votes per day seems like an invitation to disaster. With such a limited amount of votes and with them being worth 4x more (these two changes effectively cancelling out any net change in power) even if whales don't choose to just vote on themselves, it's going to lead mostly to upvote stagnation with everyone voting on people in their circles and more power to bots and curation trails. Many are going to want to spend all their votes ensuring their own survival on the platform.
I understand that we can scale down our voting power, the question is though, how many will do so?
The idea behind it seems to be that we will all be more careful to vote for quality material. What it will actually create is a more competitive, less cooperative atmosphere which incentivizes more scheming and backdoor deals. It will look more and more like the dog eat dog world of "selling yourself" and networking for contacts.
The main result of this change is likely to be users voting based on their personal interest to an even greater extent, and a lot more "I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine" on all levels.
The incentive to vote on many posts encourages a sense of abundance and community where we are more eager to give. Limited upvotes to such an extreme degree is going to turn us all into hoarders.
I hope I'm wrong. Please tell me I'm wrong :-)
I imagine a few minor adjustments and this HF could be just what we need though.

I trust that all the brilliant and decent people here will come together to find a solution to whatever problems arise. We just need to speak our voice and listen to others and we can find a solution.

I don't have the scaling slider... It appears above 400 something SP I once read. Do you happen to know this?
Once you have 1 million "vests" you will get the slider - and no I don't understand "vests" much but it's some combo of your wallet and reputation and stuff. You can see your vest total now at steemd.com
Hmm I am at 0.634 vests now... Some time to go before the slider then.
Unless everything I just said changes in 3 hours or so with the HF19 kicking in.
We'll just wait and wonder then...

Is using trails a better option with this? I upvote manually but I have considered starting to rely on trails.
i won't. i don't like that whole system. I think it will be ok. just afew weeks of confusion
Only 10 votes means less engagement I guess. Commenting without upvoting is in many cases not suitable. At least imo, because when i read something it is mostly because I'm interested in it and I want to thank the author with an upvote.
Scaling down the votingpower would be an option, but I don't have a slider where I can do so. I believe you get a slider when you're above 400 something SP, but maybe someone can confirm.
I've heard that too, I know you can adjust your voting power on trails.....but that's all automated, which is not how I want to give my votes.
I agree, it's kind of like a token of gratitude, of friendship. I want to upvote all my comments AND other peoples posts when I read good ones. 10 votes a day aren't enough to do one or the other.
Maybe they will invite a slider for all of us now?

A bar or some sort where you can adjust the power you're voting with.

I think the update is simply aiming to encourage more people to improve the quality of their content.
it seems like a really counter productive way to do that because right now more powerful votes go towards users with a reputation for bringing in high payouts in hopes to get curation rewards. There are also those who use their vote to help their social position.
This effectively doesn't change anything except that they can do what they do 4x harder. It will likely have the opposite effect.
People will still vote. No I've is that voted about their voting power now and it will carry on I think

I do, a while ago I noticed my vote wasnt having an effect so ever since have fiddled with the slider to try and keep the VP above 75

Once you have 500 steem power you get it.
Does this 500SP happen to be the equivalent of 1 millon "vests"? Because that is what's mentioned in another comment by @sircork.
Possibly, I have no idea when it comes to all that vests stuff. I just count it in SP. Definitely 500 And boom the slider is there :0)
