A very Personal favor I have to ask from my fellow steemians. Please Read and Resteem
I joined steemit 4 months ago. At first I didn't make any posts. I was more like getting a feel of the community. Then I started making my own posts few times a week. I made sure they contain some value to the community and that a large portion of the post is original content and quoted when I was copy pasting.
Steemit is a community where rewards are split according to the contributions. It's not all fair. You could work hard and only get few cents because all your 30 something upvotes were minnows and another someone can earn few dollars because of 1 whale. But that's not the point. The community is the point. At least that's how I thought of the whole matter.
Steemit has the single greatest large online community on the face of Earth. I've seen some great communities but they were all tiny. Some people claim that steemit is better than what FB was at the height of its quality. I'm not surprised. Providing quality content sometimes going as long as to make multiple 200+ word comments a day I've gained about 60 followers during the last months. I got my first 172 by mostly just commenting on other people's posts while earning few cents.
But then I started seeing a terrible trend. A trend that attacks the very foundation of steemit. I'm not talking about the tech. I'm talking about the quality of the content. I'm seeing a considerable influx of people on steemit who plagiarize content (according to @cheetah) or simply make low quality posts. In most cases the language used in post and the language used in comments are heavens apart. They beg for upvotes and comment spam all over steemit.
The worst part it birds of a feather flock together. They almost grow into a Mafia commenting and upvoting and following each other. They also increase their reputation through making whats colloquially known as "Shit Posts".
This is the single largest threat to steemit. Blockchain will stay. Comments and posts will survive. Tech will only improve. But quality sin't easy to build or fix when damaged. Ask yourself why you are on steemit. You may invest a lot of money on STEEM. But If you are active, you must love this platform. I know for sure that steemit is my favorite place on the internet.
Most of these spammers have joined on November and have South Asian origins which is home to quarter of the global population. I love steemit because it's a place for intelligent discussion and a place to find really amazing valuable people even when I pick a heated argument with them. Then these suckers come and ruin the platform.
Everything you post on steemit is stored forever on the blockchain. Ask yourself does your comments need to be stored forever and how will they contribute to the community and the world if stored in such a way.Everybody makes tiny posts of few words. But they are few and far between. Your comment section has nothing constructive about it. It's just wasting the resources of steemit.
I've lived in the South Asian region for a long time. I've met the kind of people who make these posts. They are not something you want on steemit. They are just spamming the network all for few cents and they'll dump the system when it's in ruin. These people only want to game the system. It's really scary. It can and will bring ruin to steemit from within.
Thank you for reading this far. I'm a minnow with tiny bit of SP. For today alone I've had my voting power depleted multiple times because steemit is full of spam and I'm not willing to sit idly. One spammer posts 10+ or even about 20 spam per hour. Yes, PER HOUR!!!
I didn't join steemit to police spam and I want to use my votes to upvote the content I like. I'm sure you are thinking the same. But if we don't do anything, this will only spread. I've seen multiple serial spammers with reputation at high 40s. Is that fair. I know how I reached that kind of reputation and I say it's nowhere close to fair. Not even the slightest.
I don't ask for your upvote. I don't ask you to put your valuable time on getting rid of spammers by depleting your voting power. But you are bound to come across these spammers and they generally follow and comment on each other. One look at comment section and you know who's who. Just once a week flag one bloodsucker. That's all I'm asking. Steemit is an amazing place we love. We shouldn't let it get ruined because some random leeches want few quick bucks.

Above is a list of comment sections I've stumbled upon for today alone. I've tried to flag as much spam as possible. But I don't feel like I'm making enough of a dent. And this is just the easy to notice copy/paste spamming. I've seen some posting guides on using pirated software and cringe worthy advises on picking up girls and self-help. Steemit is about intelligent discussions. Piracy or voodoo self-help life advise and random memes posted 10 times a day isn't the steemit I came for.
Several people have helped me fight the good fight and I thank you all. Your support and ammo has been helpful. I know I'm not alone and I know steemit is only beginning.
I only ask my fellow steemians to do 2 things. Understand that the low quality people is the single greatest threat to steemit and spread awareness. And second: Just flag one spammer a week. I'm not asking because of some altruistic high ground. It's a selfish request to see my favorite place on internet in it's best shape.
Hiya! I just wanted to thank you for what you are doing. Both you and @miti are doing something that is difficult and not many want to do it. I am super new here and have spent considerable time over the last few days reading and researching posts in Steemit and I have come across quite a bit of low quality content. I agree with you if all of us just flags one spam a week it would make a difference. Will learn how to do that asap. Upvoted and followed!
By the way if you don't mind some newbie questions I would really appreciate the sharing.
What does it mean to me and how does it affect me if I flagged/down voted a comment or someone?
Thanks again and keep up the great work!

Hopefully it's not overwhelming. You downvote someone with the flag button on the upper right corner of the post. There are some big flagging wars going on steemit. Don't think too much about them. Take it slow. At the current state a flag is the opposite of a downvote. The only difference is that when you get upvoted, each vote improves your reputation. But when you are flagged(downvoted) your reputation only goes down if the person flagging you has a higher reputation than you.

Thanks a lot for the whale account links. I'll certainly help them to make steemit a better place.
I'm new here but this post has lot of information i was seeking for. Thanks for this awesome article.
Welcome to steemit :-)
You can try my blog to find out my own content and great articles written by other great people on steemit. https://steemit.com/@vimukthi You might find few interesting people to follow.
I think it is apart of steemit even if it is bad. Steemit relies on the very core of free speech. Although some will take advantage by having steemit restrict them would be the reverse thought of using steemit. People will always find other ways to take advantage of the system. It is up to the community to reward them as best they deserve. A few cents I do not think will do harm, but multiple spamming accounts may slow growth of steemit. I believe the growth rate on steemit is slow compare to other social platforms is because steemit is inherently trying to stop spam.
Not saying you should stop doing what you are doing but if you look at cheetah and other curating steemians there are plenty of new accounts caught for spamming. As an idea if someone has zero or negative rating for too long of a period their account is removed or suspended. I do not know how blockchains work in regards to removal but at least be archived to be never used forever is possible.
I don't mind slow growth if it means better quality and that quality can help attract more quality into the platform. Just think about the quality difference in Twitter Vs Reddit. I think steemit should become the next step. We need our purple cow. Snapchat has short-lived and self-deleting content as their purple cow. For steemit it should be unparalleled quality.
Amazing post. UpVoted and re-STEEMed.
Keep up the great work!!!
Thank you for your support.
I'll tell you a secret. You are an inspirational STEEMIAN. Keep it up!!!

@osman28
I have not been on Steemit that long, and I love it! I completely agree though that there are a lot of accounts that are just spam or bad content, sometimes it is difficult to find good creators. I fear that this will only get worse as steemit gets bigger
Welcome to steemit!
I see you've written some good content. Followed.
Steemit has the advantage of weighted voting. If those who have influence over the platform work to crush the negative influence, we can preserve this platform for a longer time. We need to create the right atmosphere. Think LinkedIn, Facebook and Snapchat. They each have different levels of vanity with LinkedIn being a good productive platform and Snapchat not having anything of long term value.
We need to create the right atmosphere and maintain it.
Happy steeming!
