[ATTENTION devs, @dan, @ned, @dantheman, @itsascam:] Suggestions, Ideas, Thoughts and Bugs with/for Steemit.com - Ways to make Steemit the best Social Media platform it can be! [Revised Edition - Not a Repost]

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

First let me say I haven't done much web-development, programming or coding in 10 years so take this post with a "grain of salt" as it is just my two cents!

Now, as a chronic Steemian I have noticed quite a few things about the platform and as a frequent user of Steemit.Chat and mod in numerous groups I have heard many complaints/concerns. I will try to organize everything in a neat manner, as best as possible.

Suggestions, Ideas and Bugs:

SUGGESTION: The FOLLOW & MUTE buttons on a user's blog page should show on all @user pages. By that I mean if you go to @venuspcs it takes you to my blog, but if you then click on Posts, Replies, Feeds, Curation rewards, Author rewards or Wallet the buttons no longer show. - Why is this important? Well because if you are deciding to FOLLOW or MUTE someone you may want to know more about them than just the articles they are posting. You may want to check their Posts (which include comments), Replies (which include comments) history to properly determine if they are worthy of being FOLLOW'ed or if they are really a troll that needs to be MUTED.

*** This feature has been recently added, Thank You! ***

SUGGESTION: @user/curation-rewards & @user/author-rewards need some help. The new layout is nice and having a limit to the number of items that display is awesome, but the Older/Newer buttons are hard to see (especially on mobile devices). Also why not add a "Number of items to display" option with a drop down menu at the top of the pages. Or a clickable index map (Pg.1 | Pg.2 | Pg.3 | >>) on the top and bottom of the pages.

*** This feature still needs to be added/changed/worked on! ***

SUGGESTION: @user/transfers (aka Wallet) no longer shows any real history, it appears that only a few days worth show and there is no way to see older transfers. This should get the same treatment as curation-rewards and author-rewards pages.

*** This feature still needs to be added/changed/worked on! ***

BUG: submit.html needs some serious work. If you try pasting (CTRL-V) anything from any document (even html in a text file) the page freezes up and often crashes the browser. If you are like me and you like to write your stories in a document on your computer then "Submit a Story" on steemit you have to convert it to plain_text.txt file and then copy and paste it, then put all the formatting back in to the story in the editor.

*** This feature still needs to be added/changed/worked on! ***
Please for the love of all that is right FIX THE SUBMIT PAGE!

BUG: Additionally, if you start typing in the box as soon as the page loads (even if you are just typing regular text) the editor defaults to "Raw HTML" mode. So if you don't know HTML then you have to remove everything from the editor and click "Editor" in the top right corner and start all over.

*** This feature still needs to be added/changed/worked on! ***

IDEA: It would be really nice if the submit.html page also had a File Convert function so we could upload our RTF/DOC files we wrote the article in and it would automatically convert it and place it in the editor for our review.

*** This feature still needs to be added/changed/worked on! ***

IDEA: It would also be nice if the submit.html page had support for more HTML tags and possibly some Javascript. I understand that it is limited for security reasons but at least support for the full suite of HTML 5 tags would be nice.

*** This is a new suggestion/idea/bug and has yet to be implemented. ***

IDEA:It would also be nice if the submit.html page had an enhanced editor with support for ALL HTML5 and MARKUP commands/code so that people who are not familiar with HTML can create high quality and professional posts with ease.....even those who are familiar with HTML would enjoy not having to type it manually I am sure!

*** This is a new suggestion/idea/bug and has yet to be implemented. ***

IDEA: The "tags" box should also state that the 5 tag limit includes tags used in your post!

*** This feature still needs to be added/changed/worked on! ***

BUG: Thumbnails - There is currently no way for an Author to determine which image (from their post) is used as the thumbnail image on site index pages. All HTML, JavaScript and Style commands are ignored by Steemit.com or stripped by the editor. Adding an option to the editor to designate which picture is the thumbnail would be nice.

*** This feature still needs to be added/changed/worked on! ***

Suggestion: The submit.html page currently does not allow for designating the size (to be displayed) of images or what position (in relation to the text) to place the images (above, inline, wrap). Adding support for the full HTML5 spec to both the Editor and Raw HTML features would resolve this problem.

*** This is a new suggestion/idea/bug and has yet to be implemented. ***

SUGGESTION: # tags - There is currently no way to FOLLOW your favorite # tags on Steemit.com. This would be an amazing feature to have if it was implemented just like the User FOLLOW feature is currently implemented.

*** This seems to be a really hot topic right now that a lot of people are clambering for.
Please please please add this feature soon! ***

SUGGESTION: Notifications - Now that the FOLLOW system has had a major upgrade (FEEDS) there needs to be an option in a users personal FEED page to receive "Browser Notifications".

*** Why was this feature not added yet, surely it is only one or two lines of code! ***

SUGGESTION: Reputation Score needs:
     a. Better documentation
     b. How about Color Coding the reputation score? Red for DANGER, Orange for Warning, White for Normal, Green for Above Average, Silver for Blogger, Platinum for Journalist and Gold for THE BEST! - or something along those lines!

*** This feature still needs to be added/changed/worked on! ***

SUGGESTION: @user/posts should be renamed Comments (@user/comments) as that is what they are. Labeling them Posts makes me think they should be "BLOG posts" not "COMMENTS on BLOG posts".

*** This feature still needs to be added/changed/worked on! ***

SUGGESTION: BUY STEEM POWER button should be removed from the index pages and added to the drop down menu where it currently says "Buy Steem" should say "Buy Steem/Steem Power" - I have heard numerous users complain that this sets a bad tone for newbies coming to Steemit and could potentially scare them away by making them think they "have to buy something" in order to utilize the site.

*** This feature still needs to be added/changed/worked on! ***

SUGGESTION: The Tags & Topics on the index pages should actually have a # symbol in front of each of them. This will help newbies understand what they really are and how to use them.

Also the "Filter" box should filter ALL TAGS ever used on Steemit.com and not just the # trending tags.
SUGGESTION: @user pages where it shows: XXX followers | XXX posts | XXX followed should be clickable.

     a. When XXX followers is clicked it should reveal a hidden layer showing everyone that is following that user with a checkbox beside each of them so you can easily "FOLLOW THEM BACK"
     b. When the XXX posts is clicked it should reveal a hidden layer showing that users last 10 or so posts (Blog Posts/Comments/Replies)
    c. When XXX followed is clicked it should reveal a hidden layer showing everyone being followed by that user. If you are that user it should also provide a way to UNFOLLOW any of those users (like a check box beside each one you can uncheck to unfollow).

*** These features still need to be added/changed/worked on, with the exception of the ones in Italics! ***

GRAMMATICAL SUGGESTION: When you go to an @user page. At the top it shows the username and reputation score. When you mouse-over the reputation score it reads: "The reputation score is based on the history of votes received by the account, and is used to hide low quality comment.". It should actually read: "The reputation score is based on the history of votes received by this account, It is used to hide low quality content/comments/replies."

*** Thanks for correcting this guys, I noticed you changed "comment" to "content"....awesome! ***

Suggestion: Make the users posts editable after 1st payout. At least for 30 days. There is often times content needs to be edited, pictures/links break, etc.

*** This feature still needs to be added/changed/worked on! ***

Suggestion: Adult Content - There is currently no proper/standardized way to mark Adult Content or Limit who has access to it. I saw several people in chat recently discussing this issue and I believe it was @WiseHammer that proposed the idea below:

A. Enable special tags like # nsfw, # over18, # adultsonly etc.
B. Replace (automatically) words in the titles to those posts that are offensive or profane with $*@%.
C. When any of those links (using the tags from A) are clicked take the user to an intermediate page that says something like "This content is for Adult Viewing Only, please provide your Date of Birth and click Enter to continue" then after verifying the date entered places them at 18 years old or older send them to the content they clicked to see.

While this isn't ideal, it will minimize children seeing inappropriate content, but most importantly it will remove Legal Liability from Steemit.com or it's users if a child does see that inappropriate content.

Hey there, this is a lot of work you have put in clearly !! Great to voice your suggestions like this !! I hope the team will see it and give them some idea,s on these valid points you brought up !! Yes we all need to get out of that truck i agree !! ; - ) Power be to you Steem on !!

I agree

There's a lot to improve on but we are going there. Salute to steem devs. Great post. Nice feedbacks. When adressed this could result to a smooth steem user experience

You know that SteemIt open source now. You can run it on your PC directly off the client.

Not sure your point but let me say this: I do not possess the technical skill or knowledge to run a localized version of steemit on my pc, much less institute these changes/suggestions even on a local version of Steemit.

Good post @venuspcs. Was it @warhammer (whom I've never met) or @wisehammer?

As to adult and other content they did add support for NSFW in the title. It does not show in the normal feeds but it is still there. @derekaireth has been talking about this on some of his posts. He mentioned @erotic who has been posting a bunch of stuff. Though I looked at some of it and there may be some copyright snafus in the future as some were clearly labeled as coming from Playboy and places like that.

This is a very good post.

I have never met @warhammer either or seen him on chat....didn't even know there was such a person until you said so just now.

Yeah doesn't your post say you thought you heard it from @WarHammer? (unless you've edited it)

Fixed! It has been a long day, this is my 3 article not counting the one I left in a comment on @dantheman post.

I reply long because a lot of the time where I end up making my money is replies. People don't have near as much interest in the things I say. So if I am to do well here it is usually by replying to other people.

I am totally fine with this. I simply needed to learn the ropes and find out what my niche is. :)

@chaospoet does pretty well but I try not to over post with him or I'll kill his goose that lays the golden eggs.

@dwinblood

I'll kill his goose that lays the golden eggs.

Did you pull that out of your arse????

I'm Warhammer only during sex @venuspcs ! :P

Keep dreaming bucko!

Some good suggestions here.

Curious as to why you're tagging itsascam, he's got nothing to do with the dev team..

There are some good suggestions here, some more feasible than others, but it would be much better if you could post this to github as an issue. In here it will disappear and be forgotten, and since you can't update your post there's no way to track the progress.
