VOTE!.jpg

Self voting of comments is being abused by a number of people on Steemit. There even posts talking about 'hacking' the platform which promotes self voting of comments to build personal wealth.
If the purpose of curation on Steemit is to curate good content and build a social media content platform that is on a par with other social media platforms then self voting of comments is not in the spirit of the platform. Voting power therefore should be used to upvote good content rather than to enrich yourself. By using your voting power to upvote your own comments you are effectively taking steem away from new up and coming authors and damaging Steemit in the long term.

While I was learning about the platform I tried upvoting my own comments a couple of times but I never felt comfortable with it as that voting power could be used to upvote other peoples good content. I do however vote up my own posts, but 100% of my earnings from posts goes into Steempower. As a new author, struggling to get attention and building a reputation, I don't see a problem with this. It makes virtually no difference anyway. An upvote on my own post is worth approximately $0.02 anyway.

Here are some suggestions for hard fork 20.

  • Self voting of comments should be removed.
  • Self voting of your own posts should be discouraged for established authors by allowing only 10% or 20% voting power for users with a high reputation score (say above 60)
  • Allow minnows to build their Steempower by voting up their own posts, but not comments.
  • Encourage unused votes to be used by more slowly increasing voting power beyond 100% (for example after 5 days at 100%, a persons voting power might rise to 105% after another 10 days, 110%, after another 20 days 115%) This might encourage those that do not actively curate to do so more often.
  • Old posts, more than 7 days old, should still be able to earn some curation rewards, so that authors can build a portfolio of content that continues to provide long term value. This is certainly the case on platforms such as YouTube, where old videos continue to earn ad revenue.

These are just a few ideas and thoughts, but at the moment it still feels like new authors need a bit more encouragement as many who only get $0.01 for spending an hour putting together a post will just get bored and go elsewhere. Hopefully with more encouragement the platform grow and attract quality authors and go from strength to strength.

Feel free to agree / disagree in the comments below.

We can do what we want with our votes. This is a free market platform.

True - I was just thinking about the long term sustainability of the platform.

Looks like you have been around a month. How about sitting back and enjoying what was built and has been operating for over a year before telling the founders how the platform should run.

Thanks. I'm not trying to tell anyone anything. Merely offering my thoughts and opinions. It's a good platform, far better in many ways than other social media platforms, but it will have to compete with the big boys if it's going to be long term sustainable. In the meantime I will take your advice and continue to enjoy the platform.

Indeed it is a market platform.

Fun fact: the morning I thought of writing on an article on why anarcho-capitalism won't work and using Steemit an example on why.

Early adaptors became wales and now control the system with there wealth. With the greediest wales even destroying the platform by selling votes. Newcomers have little to no change to make it. At least not with honest work. You might try to climb up by buying votes from those wales

I will continue using the platform for it's free speech features but I fully expect to stay plankton forever. I think the 01.Jan.2018 was the day financial opportunity ended.

There are a number of similar historical discussions you should peruse.

All the perspectives have been covered and upvoting one's own posts has been shown to be an important facet.

Let's appreciate this for what it is and be careful not to start movements which may fracture its delicate unity.

Just read all the existing material first.

Thanks for the info. I'll have a dig around.

I certainly believe in upvoting your own posts and this opinion has been substantiated by the bees knees. But if you have better things to do with your votes then ensure you choose wisely.

Here is a legitimate reason not to upvote your own post but it is merely a recommendation for making best use of your votes.

Thanks, I upvoted your comment ;)

Congratulations! This post has been upvoted from the communal account, @minnowsupport, by unc.hermit from the Minnow Support Project. Good suggestions to my opinion. One thing is sure anyway ... something has to be done.

interesting issue, i'm new so don't know what to think, but my first impression about the option to upvote your own post was "that is weird", peace

Judging from the comments such a suggestion is not popular with those who have been on the platform a while.

Of course it is not popular with those who have been on the platform a while. It worked for them. They are not interested to hear that is stopped working.

An upvote on my own post is worth approximately $0.02 anyway.

6 month later an the situation is worse. Votes from Plankton are now less the $0.005.

new authors need a bit more encouragement as many who only get $0.01 for spending an hour putting together a post

Not even that. Post which are estimated at $0.01 get rounded to $0.00 on payout day

But the worse part are whales selling votes for profit

It's sad that they dit not listen to you as it only got worse. And dramatically so with the recent rise in the price of Steam.
