Should We Expect Steemit To Work Flawlessly?

in #steemit5 years ago (edited)

There has been a lot of discussion about the state of steemit...

A lot of users expressed doubt about the changes that have now been introduced with HFs 21/22 to the blockchain. I have seen people powering down and leaving and I have seen hateful comments that added to an often toxic environment. But I have also seen (ab)users who stoped posting since the HF. Their posts which are always heavily promoted by bots are being downvoted to such a degree that they are actually losing steem as a result. This indicates to me that the downvote pool - one of the changes introduced with the EIP - does help in bringing about a balance overall and that as a result steem is being distributed to users who deserve it more.

I think the debates and even the problems within steemit could generally be condisered to be something positive. These kinds of actions and reactions are a long process towards finding equilibrium. This is because no system is perfect and change within a system always comes about through the debates and crises that test its limits and weaknesses. So when you see an outcry of someone about the state of things, perhaps look at it as a voicing for change and not necessarily as how things will always be. Sure, people are impatient, but changing a system always needs time. It needs input and discussions and perhaps most of all confidence that what we create can be ultimately useful to people's lives.

So should we expect that everything works well and feels polished? While it would not be wrong to have this kind of expectation in principle (and is actually required to move in the direction that we want to go), it is certainly not very realistic. As already stated it will take time, patience and intelligence to implement the changes the community wants as a whole. Therefore we should see the recent HF as a stepping stone in a direction towards improvement. This does not mean that every HF will be without mistakes, but making mistakes is how most of us learn.

Maybe you'll also find my post about why I think that steem still has a lot of potential for growth interesting.

Congratulations! Your post has been selected as a daily Steemit truffle! It is listed on rank 10 of all contributions awarded today. You can find the TOP DAILY TRUFFLE PICKS HERE.

I upvoted your contribution because to my mind your post is at least 3 SBD worth and should receive 201 votes. It's now up to the lovely Steemit community to make this come true.

So should we expect that everything works well and feels polished?

In case of blockchain based systems: yes! They don't have to be polished, but you should expect that they are working well. Just look at Ethereum: the project often gets criticized for its slow development, but the slow pace is a deliberate choice: the software has to work as intended, there is not much room for experiments. If something fails, the consequences can be devastating.

thanks for your comment @cpufronz I think I should have been more specific. What I meant was the economic side of steemit (split of author/curation, reward curves etc.), the interface, user sign ups and so on. I think what you are referring to is the underlying technology, and that, no question, has to work!

Yes, but I also think that the economic side of things should be well thought out. Some experiments are fine, but constantly changing rules are off-putting for many potential users.

that's true... But I guess because this is a world's first attempt at a social media blockchain, it's unavoidable for there to be some adjustments. Finger's crossed that the community will find something that works soon. But #newsteem seems to be already an improvement

From my point of view it is difficult to judge now, we have to wait a month or two before we really can see the impact of the recent hard forks.
