An investment portfolio

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

I mentioned in my last article about writing consistently a point I would like to expand upon, and that was the idea of Steemit as an actor and investment portfolio.

When an actor or model travels to job interviews, they often carry a portfolio of head shots with them and in many cases a reel. This serves a couple of purposes. Firstly, it is a resume that outlines skills and strengths and can tell of languages or accents that are possible. Secondly, it is a spread of looks and styles and contains various expressions and poses that attempts to indicate range and depth to inspire casting agents to choose them for specific roles. Lastly, it is a proof of work experience that demonstrates the level of demand or depth of work the person has had.

I see Steemit in a similar way with the blog feed being the portfolio and reel. It is the proof of our work, the range and also the level of audience demand for us as participants within the platform. Where it differs heavily from the portfolio is that there is no need to act in a movie or walk a runway as the payment is on the portfolio content itself. That is quite a unique situation if you think about it.

Each post adds to your range, experience and demand and has the potential to attract casting agents that will only need you for a few minutes at a time, their time. This idea should be quite attractive to many as it is essentially working for yourself without all of the outlay.

But it still requires investment.

Any investment advisor is likely to recommend diversity in the portfolio. This is the range that an actor will demonstrate in an attempt to get a part, any part at times. If they don't qualify for one position, they may gain another. Steemit is no different in many ways as the depth of our content will demonstrate our range.

But again this is different to a normal stock investment because of the level of control over it. Most investors invest in a company they hope will improve its position (let's keep it simple) and their investment will see gains, but they actually have very little if any control over the decisions made at that company nor, their investment other than buy in or sell. Two investors that each put 100 in at the same time will both see the same rewards or losses.

This is not the case at Steemit. Not only do we as investors have some say in how and what decisions are made, our investments made are not of equal value. There is no straight line for content reward even if those that do the rewarding have a straighter line these days. In other words, not all posts are created equally.

What this means is that investment quality does matter in the regard to what is posted. Essentially, we are investing our resources into our own company, the company being our own work meaning we do have a say over how we invest our time and effort and control the decisions in which direction to take the company. This is a massive opportunity that many here may not get easily in the walking world. Not only that, other people are working here too and some of their success, helps our own company.

Our company operates in a market place like any other industry and there is diversity in content, quality, vision and strategy. If a new company enters into a market segment that is already saturated, it is very difficult to build a support base. If trying to compete on price, quantity must be high. But, if looking into building a customer base for the long-term, quality should take precedence over volume. There is so much room here currently that there is still space in many sectors and as the user base is increasing, many sectors are far from saturation point.

Essentially, Steemit is both the actor and the investment portfolio rolled in to one. We showcase ourselves, our knowledge, our ability to add value to the platform and also to people's lives and we reap the rewards of our investment directly from the audience. We are displaying our resume, and our stock portfolio at the same time as well as our our work ethic, approach to life and willingness to invest in ourselves and those around us too.

That is pretty bloody awesome I think.

Great post, sector is productivity and goal setting, at the moment it is far from saturated but I hope to make it my own.

Thanks for sharing such an interesting perspective on Steemit, it made sense.

I look forward to it. I post occasionally and casually in productivity but it sounds like you are going to get technical. Good, I need the help.

Well said!

Thank you @billz
