Steemit Vs Facebook! Where is Steemit lacking and what needs to be done!
Firstly I want to tell you that I am not relating Facebook with Steemit as they are completely different platforms.
So without further due let's get into it.
Alexa is a website which tracks the progress and statistics of websites and from the past few months I have been following it closely.
The international rank of Steemit is #942
Websites have of course different ranks in different countries but at alexa, average rank is taken.
Now let's take a look at the Facebook rank
Facebook is ranked 3rd all over the world which makes it one of the most popular websites in the world.
The above pictures gave an overview of rankings about the two websites.
What is the problem with Steemit and where is Facebook better
- Steemit takes about 3.956 seconds to load which is very slow and might count as one of the flaws the website has.
Facebook takes 2.885 to load which is also slow but much faster compared to that of steemit.
According to alexa 85% of the websites are faster than steemit.
- The world's largest country in terms of population(China) is not in the top five countries with most number of users.
United States has been leading the user count since the start by a huge margin.
United States again covers the majority of users when it comes to Facebook but Facebook is almost used in ever country which is where steemit lacks.
- The number of male users in steemit are dominant over females and almost 90% of the steemit users are males.
Now if we compare the above stats to Facebook, more than 60% of the users are females (there might be some men signing up with female names).
Overall the female users are dominant on facebook.
- The time taken for new account verification process is huge sometimes.
I was on google play store and I looked at eSteem application to see what users say about eSteem and I found this
Lot of users give up using steemit because sometimes verification process may take months because it is manual.
Now I know @ned spoke about speeding up the process of account verification but I believe the account verification process needs to be automated because we might see huge traffic in the coming months especially after the release of Smart Media Tokens.
No need to mention that account creation on Facebook is instant.
- Mobile application
Mobile application is is the most necessary tool a social networking website must have and should be the priority of @ned and co. as users cannot take their laptops everywhere.
We have a decent mobile application for Facebook and most of the users access Facebook via the application.
The positives
It was just a few months back when I saw the ranking of steemit on alexa was around 2000 and now as I type this, it is already rose up to 941.
That is huge progress indeed.Last week Japan was was the 5th major country in terms of visitors which is now overtaken by India and this really is a good thing because India is the second largest country in terms of population.
- Scams like the recent bitconnect scam brought a huge traffic to steemit.
This shows that we need to write more about such scams as there are plenty.
Need
Smartphone application is the most important thing needed right now so that users can access steemit everywhere.
Creating a lighter version of steemit for those who browse steemit on mobile(You can name it steemit lite).
Doing promotional activities in countries like China.
Improving the account verification process.
If it can't be automatic, it has to be fast.
All the pictures are from alexa.com except the one with ratings which is from Google play.
I liken Steemit to Twitter. When I make comparisons it’s usually Twitter that springs to mind, and it’s the finer features I miss, eg the list function. However, those will come in time, and there are more pressing issues. Probably the two things that concern me most are No1. The registration time, as you mention it needs to be faster. It took me around ten days to get accepted. No 2. and it’s not one you mention, is the feeling that it’s just a place to make coin, rather than to genuinely distribute ideas. Until it becomes a platform where the reward comes from the act of sharing what you know, rather than the chance of receiving a few steem, I don’t believe it will thrive. Money is a great way to kick a behaviour into action (which I believe was the intention when steem was imagined), but it’s best to fade that out for a more internal reward. If you can’t fade it out then perhaps you’re in for the wrong reasons. Of course it will eventually balance itself if popularity increases, because the more users the more the incentives dilute. My thoughts anyway.
I mentioned that I am not relating steemit with Facebook, I am just making a comparison because of the popularity of Facebook.
The comparisons I did make are mostly related to user interface and account creation.
However if we go in depth there are many problems associated with Steemit like the you mentioned and other one being (Perhaps the biggest issue) that the whales always end up on trending page no matter what they write.
There are definitely some better content creators here on steemit who give up eventually when their content goes unnoticed.
Very good in depth comparison. Great points raised. A lot more work has to be done with Steemit.com and Busy.org before it is anywhere near Facebook's usability and popularity.
Interesting analysis, I think people will start to be leaving Facebook in their droves soon enough, especially with all the censorship going on. Steemit needs to be in a position to catch the fall out.
Indeed.
That is why there is a need of faster and better steemit.
And you haven't mention bandwidth problems for newbies. It's really frustrating, if you can't post, comment, upvote, when you wish to do it.
I'm sure Steemit will surpass Facebook. Thanks for your information.
Set your goals high and don't stop until you get there.
BRAH! Did you just use a microaggressioN!?
Nope
