Recently I’ve been spending a lot of time on Golos and my blog on Steemit has definitely been suffering for it. This has me thinking that it may be time for a comeback, but, well, for this post Golos will be the main topic anyway.

Now with Golos reaching number 35 on CoinMarketCap, maybe it's time for a survey of how things are going there.

Historically the reward distribution on Steemit was considered to be the main reason for low user retention rates.

Unlike Steemit, Golos was launched with an ICO, and it was expected that ICO would provide more flat power distribution there, resulting in more flat reward distribution in turn.

I dare to say that it didn't work out. Also, on the surface level, power distribution there might not seem very extreme; however, it's well known that there’s lots of regular accounts there that are under the control of just one person.

As for reward distribution, unlike here, on Golos we don't have any curation guilds yet. Also, flag wars between whales have not been an issue so far.

(There is one Bad Whale on Golos. So far, Good Whales seem to have been able to beach her on shore and keep her out of the water)

For fellow Steemians interested in comparing reward distributions here and there and who want to try to figure out possible reasons for mismatches, I will use approximate data from 09.02.2017. However, his also applies to average data from last week because the situation is quite stable both here and there.

BENCHMARK DATA

STEEMIT 1300 Posts $7000 Reward Pool $5.40 Average Payout

GOLOS 500 Posts $4700 Reward Pool $9.30 Average Payout

Illustration # 1

Top post on Steemit generated $200+, or about 3.5% of Total Reward Pool (TRP)

Top post on Golos generated $500+ or about 11.5% of TRP

Illustration # 2

Steemit: 70 Top-posts shared 50% of TRP, 1230 posts shared another half, ratio 1/17

Golos: 13 Top-posts shared 50% of TRP, 483 posts shared another half, ratio 1/37

Illustration # 3

Steemit: 420 posts got above-average ($5.40) payouts, 880 below-average, ratio 1/2

Golos: 90 posts got above-average ($9.30) payouts, 410 below-average, ratio 1/4.5

It looks like people on Golos don't mind this inequality so far. I made suggestion there to implement a WhaleFlaggingBot that would flag lightly any post which generated more than 5% of TRP and flag with full weight any post with more than 10% of TRP in order to provide some no-drama-redistribution, but have not found any support for this idea.

Now, back to Steemit.

I guess not many people scroll the trending page on Steemit down to numbers below 200, so I would like to give you some idea what it looks like:

The reason for this equality is quite obvious, it's the same curation trail for voting. Which reminds me of this comic I reposted a few months ago:

Looking at that, I wonder if we could go even further and just introduce some sort of Steemit Universal Basic Income, like $1 per day for any verified Steemit who's been active last week. It looks like 15-20% of TRP allocated for this purpose would be enough to do the trick.

Golos could then remain the wild, unregulated playground and Steemit could become some sort of reserve. Everyone could choose which approach suits them the best right.

Any thoughts?

Sort:

One item of interest that people might not be aware of. Some steemit users just have golos accounts with free golos power in them (same keys as their steemit account unless youve changed your steemit keys since they made golos.)

I realized last week that i have a golos account with like 500 golos power just sitting in it.

Yes. Interesting that also Steemit Whales having considerable (100.000+) amounts of Golos Power are not active there too... no curating, no power down.

they might not know...i found out by accident (googling a key i was looking for in steemd that was also in golosd.)

I doubt that @dan, @ned or @smooth wouldn't know what's going on ;)
Also with SteemIt inc employers of course there migth be some arrangement not to power down during first few months or something like that.

very interesting post, and I am looking forward to read more those kind of comparisons.

Nevertheless...

Steemit Universal Basic Income

I have to say... that this is worst idea about steemit which I heard this year.

It will be so easy to exploit in so many ways... and being active doesn't mean that you actually created any value.

Idea about basic income is in my opinion terrible, but whole post is very good, so upvote!

I can live without UBI too )
The main point was to demonstrate that with curation guilds we sort of alredy implemented it)

I am upvoting this post simply for your hand-drawn graphics! I this world of slick images, I really like yours better.

You also reminded me that I need to go take a look at Golos. Is cross posting allowed? I am not a Russian speaker, so would I be shunned if I post in English?

Hi,
If you still can remember your Steemit password from November 2016 you can start right away )
About 8000 active Steemit accounts were included into Golos genesis block, you are also in https://golos.io/@mrosenquist/transfers
English interface is available and there are quite a number of active users posting in english.

Outstanding post! ☆☆☆☆☆🐳🐳🐳🐳🐳

Interesting. How does the Total Number of Accounts compare to active users on Golos.

SteemIt has a retention issue. I don't think it has to do with rewards, it has to do with culture.

The total number of accounts is really flawed there, theoretically it's about 20.000, active users less then 1000

Thank you for the reply and the post. Interesting to read.
