This Could Be The Easiest Way To Lose Your Steemit Account Or Password And Possible Fix!!! Steemit Inc, Take A Look!

in #steemit7 years ago

Let’s start with an exercise in "Patience", before we go into this pertinent topic proper!

Yes, just below, we will talk about one very easy and fast way to lose your entire steem account or perhaps, the 1 million steem you have saved up. This is something that needs to be looked into, by our precious steem developers and fixed and this is something we should be well aware of!

Too, i will relate my simple suggestions on how to fix this, perhaps that would help!

For now though, what do you think happens, if you sent yourself 100 steem from your very own steem balance? Will the transaction pull through? Well, yes!

Same as you can send yourself a Gmail containing your "steem password", to have a copy of it in your inbox; you can send some steem to yourself, from your very own steem balance

Hahaha, I wonder if this has any impact, disadvantage or advantage but it does work as seen below!

Look at this next image, to see that i sent myself 0.01 steem:

But hey, what happens if you mistakenly entered your steemit password into the memo-field, while trying to transfer steem?

Is that even possible or does the memo-field reject it? "Well, don’t try it, except you are ready to quickly change your steemit password!"

Remember that the steem blockchain is bare and permanent and for newbies, it may be a hassle to change your password and back-up the new password! Always remember too, that your steemit password, is the key to your steemit account and is not retrievable, if lost!

So this becomes a very important issue! If you do steem transfers often and especially, if you have had to use a public computer, where your passwords aren’t auto-filled or remembered and you have to copy and paste your password multiple times to accomplish multiple steem transfers, you could easily have placed your steemit password in the memo-field and without taking note, have processed the transfer and left your steemit password on our bare steem blockchain.

Too, remember that some cryptocurrency wallet addresses or transfer memos for exchanges etc, look similar to steemit passwords! Additional reason, to be cautious and to know that it may be very easy to mistakenly place your steemit password as a memo, while transferring steem!

A steem password contains 52 alphanumeric character and this image below, is further help with recognizing a steemit password:

Note that the password field understands and knows the parameters that a 52-character-long alphanumeric string should meet, inorder to even be considered as a possible steemit password and it has the algorithm to identify password entries, that are not satisfying these parameters.

Hint: A steemit password wouldn't contain 0 (Zero), O (Capital o), I (Capital i) and l (Lower case L) characters!

This could also be the solution for the transfer memo-field in our wallets!

There are so many times, when I have almost submitted my password during a steem transfer. It is quite easy to make this error!

Especially, when i am using a new browser in which case, I am required to copy/paste my steemit password to complete every transfer; I would have my password already copied and would have pasted it in the memo-field instead etc

If you've transfer steem many times, you may have come across this scenario.

See screenshots again:

(NB: i had some more screenshots but i didn't succeed in sending all, to my work email and got to work, only to see that "printscrn" is disabled. Thus, the need to repeat images!)

Possible Solution

Since there are parameters guiding how steemit passwords should look like; then the steem transfer memo-field can be worked on, to reject any alpha-numeric string that looks like a steemit password i.e any 52-alphanumeric-character-string containing (0 (Zero), O (Capital o), I (Capital i) and l (Lower case L) characters) and whatever other criteria, the developers see fit!

There can easily be many other suggestions on how our developers can fix this!

I tried my experiments with a random 52-alphanumeric string, avoiding (0 (Zero), O (Capital o), I (Capital i) and l (Lower case L) characters)!

In reality, I am afraid of touching my steemit password and i doubt if I will like to change it any time soon!

Thus, real life examples or experiences are welcomed!

Have you ever left your steemit password in the memo-field? Have you ever completed a steemit transfer, mistakenly forgetting your password in the memo, so that you hurriedly had to change you steemit password?

"A steemian recently, lost his Euros worth of steem"; can he have mistakenly left his password in the memo-field, during a steem transfer, without ever realizing it!

Tell us your experience!

I don’t know too many steem developers, but I do know; @timcliff @good-karma @pharesim @ausbitbank and @kyle!

Thx f0r the heads up! ?uestion, has anyone here@steemit ever changed their password? I have been thinking about it lately as I can't seem to use this password that was given, when I'm on my mobile phone.
I'm guessing it's because it was copied/pasted when first receiving it, rather than manually typing it in because whenever I manually type it in via my mobile, it rejects?
And I'm kind of nervous to change my pass. And if we do change our pass, does it have to be the same length 0r anything our heart desires?

The new password will also be randomly generated I think.

I don't know why you can't input it anywhere other than your phone, but if you do change it, you have no option. The system generates one for you. It worked perfectly for me when I made a mistake similar to what @surpassinggoogle described. I sure was nervous about it too though, but since I had no choice...

Oh, you already did that mistake? Like complete a transaction with your password left in the memo?

Well no, I put it in the chat by accident a few months ago... lolz, I'm silly...

Maybe I shall try regenerating a new pass via my mobile so that I can be able to use the pass via my mobile ;)

I bet it'll work out ok!

@inphiknit
Thx f0r the positive f0rce, I will update later when I try it out....

:)

Sounds good!

@inphiknit
I was thinking and I now believe attempting to change my password via my mobile will be impossible since I will most likely need my original pass to sign-in into the account lol Wow! Now I just have to hope that my new generated pass will work via my mobile. I also believe that the reason for the password not working via my mobile is strongly due to me copying/pasting it rather than typing it in manually.
So, I will try to manually type it in first ;)

Hope it works out, sorry I don't really have any good advice...

Not to worry. I am sure someone will come to answer this. i entertain similar fears when it comes to passwords and have not experimented!
