RE: Is facebook about to get 'Myspaced'

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

I would argue Steemit is more in the Myspace arena at the moment. It is still growing and figuring out what it wants and needs to be. It is still highly influenced by its original audience and posters.

e.g. Myspace evolved into a music sharing/customization hub. Steemit is currently a crypto/steemit hub.

Facebook knows what it is and does it job just fine. The younger generations won't really use it compared to snapchat, etc. But, I think it'll carry along just fine, especially with its successful push of instagram and instagram stories.

Steemit will find its place, and I'm sure it'll be more successful than Myspace, but it feels like we are in that awkward adolescent phase of the platform.

Out of curiosity, were you a myspace user during its hayday (~2003-2007)? I honestly don't mean any offense, but your comments sound like someone who wasn't living through those times, looking at myspace now and trying to figure where it fit in the picture back then :)

In 2006 Myspace was IT. It was the #1 social network. Majorly successful. Who your top 8 friends were really mattered. There were a couple of other networks around like Friendster and Bebo, but in most friend circles it was all about myspace.

In 2007 friends of mine started to jump over to this new network called Facebook. It was basically the same, but had a few features that really got users to jump over. For my friends, I think it was the ability to share photo albums, and to tag people in photos - the girls always wanted an easy way to see photos after an event, and the guys followed because it meant they could easily find photos of the girls they were friends with. The whole concept of "Writing on someone's wall" was also a big hit.

Myspace's DAU plummeted overnight and the platform essentially died.

The music sharing thing that it later became really wasn't so much an evolution as an attempt to re-launch using the power of the Myspace brand. Unfortunately it was just never something anyone wanted, though apparently it had some success in the indie music scene for a while.

The best comparison to a modern myspace would probably be uber. They've blazed the trail and become synonymous with ride-sharing as they've brought it into the public consciousness, but the cracks are starting to show . Anecdotally I'm seeing more reports of people preferring Lyft over uber, and uber has a ton of culture issues that have begun to impact its leadership (this week's CEO resignation). They've never shown a profit, but investors have been willing to take that risk because when they hit a certain point there's the ability to start printing money. Unfortunately, at this point something small may trigger a gigantic collapse.

Anyway, tldr Steemit would be lucky to have the success of myspace. To put it in context, my grandma knows what myspace is and she's in her 90s

haha your grandma is switched on!

Well said and fair point. Thanks for that background.

I was not one of the Myspace generation. I was nerdy enough to have my own website on Geocities and didn't need to build out anything else prior to jumping on the Facebook bandwagon in college.

Really informative reply, great outlook. When Steemit does find it's place, I am very interested to know where that is. Along the way, I have acquired a lot of steem as I believe sky is the limit.

Why post for free when you can earn if you do, right?

My favorite tagline when pushing it to friends:

Steemit - Be your own side hustle.
