Is facebook about to get 'Myspaced'

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

Sick of scrolling through facebook feed and feeling angry and sour? Me too! I have taken the app off my phone numerous times, generally only using facebook now, to chat via messenger to friends and family overseas.

The crappy videos and repetitive memes that polute the newsfeed are no good anymore.

Negativity has gone crazy! Especially when it comes to elections, politics and religious views. In opinion, the users who helped build it, are on the way to killing it.

I assume 99% of Steemers have facebook. If you do, I want to hear your thoughts on how many people you have muted or how disinterested you have become? What is your favourite social media website? Is it @steemit, Twitter, Instagram or other?

In terms of other competitors, I give Twitter a lot of credit. Being able to access, celebrities, business identities and it's punch (being short and sharp. To the point!) Twitter delivers news fast. Tweets are easy to read, and links are easily accessible.

Instagram and Snapchat... they deliver fast visual content. Very interesting and amazing things, that people either dream of or want to see.

In my opinion facebook is the next myspace and it won't be long before sites like steemit are preferred by the masses.

That said, the statistics below completely contradict the feedback I hear from my friends and family. Take a look!

Worldwide, there are over 1.94 billion monthly active Facebook users for March 2017 (Facebook MAUs) which is an 18 percent increase year over year. (Source: Facebook 5/3/17) What this means for you: In case you had any lingering doubts, statistically, Facebook is too big to ignore.

There are 1.15 billion mobile daily active users (Mobile DAU) for December 2016, an increase of 23 percent year-over-year. (Source: Facebook as of 2/01/17) This is hugely significant and shows the dramatic growth of mobile traffic on Facebook.
1.28 billion people log onto Facebook daily active users (Facebook DAU) for first Quarter of 2017, which represents a 18% increase year over year (Source: Facebook as 05/03/17) The Implication: A huge and vastly growing number of Facebook users are active and consistent in their visits to the site, making them a promising audience for your marketing efforts.

There are 1.74 billion mobile active users (Mobile Facebook MAU) for December 2016 which is an increase of 21% year-over-year (Source: Facebook as of 02/01/17).

On average, the Like and Share Buttons are viewed across almost 10 million websites daily. (Source: Facebook as of 10/2/2014)
In Europe, over 307 million people are on Facebook. (Source: Search Engine Journal) The Takeaway: This isn’t just a U.S. phenomenon – a worldwide market is available via Facebook.

Age 25 to 34, at 29.7% of users, is the most common age demographic. (Source:Emarketer 2012) What this means for you: This is the prime target demographic for many businesses’ marketing efforts, and you have the chance to engage these key consumers on Facebook.

Five new profiles are created every second. (Source: ALLFacebook 2012) The Implication: Your potential audience on Facebook is growing exponentially.

Facebook users are 76% female (out of 100% of all females) and 66% male (out of 100% of all males). This is stat is one that you really have to think about because it’s comparing the percentage of all females against the percentage of all males who are on Facebook. Sorry for the confusion. To dig a little deeper take a look at this study which does a much better job at explaining the nuances – Source: Brandwatch – https://www.brandwatch.com/2015/01/men-vs-women-active-social-media/) The Takeaway: Since this isn’t a large statistical difference, you should be able to effectively reach both genders on Facebook.

Highest traffic occurs mid-week between 1 to 3 pm. (Source: Bit.ly blog) On another note, a Facebook post at 7pm will result in more clicks on average than posting at 8pm (Source: Forbes). Go figure. How this can help you: You have the potential to reach more consumers and drive higher traffic to your site during peak usage times, but people may be more likely to be more engaged in the evenings. This statistic may be a factor when you are planning social communication scheduling. (Also consider that Facebook has a global audience, so you may want to plan around the time zone of your key market.)

On Thursdays and Fridays, engagement is 18% higher. (Source: Bit.ly blog) The Implication: Again, use this information to determine when to post in order to optimize your social media marketing efforts.

There are 83 million fake profiles. (Source: CNN) The Takeaway: Nothing is perfect, so always remain thoughtful and strategic in your efforts. Also, fake or not, these are still potential consumers. There are various reasons for fake profiles, including professionals doing testing and research, and people who want to segment their Facebook use more than is possible with one account.

Photo uploads total 300 million per day. (Source: Gizmodo) The Implication: Again, this is an indication of engaged users; also, it is an indication that there are a lot of photos, as well as other information, competing for users’ attention, so target your efforts strategically.

Average time spent per Facebook visit is 20 minutes. (Source: Infodocket) What this means for you: You could have a short time period to make your impression, so use it wisely with relevant, interesting and unique posts and offers in order to get the most return on your efforts.

Every 60 seconds on Facebook: 510,000 comments are posted, 293,000 statuses are updated, and 136,000 photos are uploaded. (Source: The Social Skinny) The Implication: Again, there are a lot of engaged and active users, but also a huge amount of information competing for their attention, so quality and strategy on your part matter.

4.75 billion pieces of content shared daily as of May 2013 which is a 94 percent increase from August 2012. (Source: Facebook)
50% of 18-24 year-olds go on Facebook when they wake up. (Source: The Social Skinny) What this means for you: Facebook is important to these users, and potentially, if done correctly, so is the content you post on it.

One in five page views in the United States occurs on Facebook. (Source: Infodocket 2012) How this helps you: This is a huge market on the web; if you use social media marketing efforts on Facebook well, you could have huge returns to show for it.
42% of marketers report that Facebook is critical or important to their business. (Source: State of Inbound Marketing 2012 The Takeaway: This is a crowded marketplace, but you can’t afford to sit it out, because odds are fairly high that your competition is there. The key is to use Facebook marketing correctly and make sure that your efforts stand out from the crowd.

16 Million local business pages have been created as of May 2013 which is a 100 percent increase from 8 million in June 2012. (Source: Facebook). Facebook marketing has transformed how business is conducted, and its use by local businesses to extend their markets continues to explode.

I hope they do! I would love to leave Facebook today, soon!

Abandon ship! Steemit > facebook haha

One should not underestimate the Zuck.

It's hard to have a conversation about Facebook's future without taking into account that it also owns Instagram and Messenger, which are immensely popular social networks... and Instagram in particular has been super aggressive in going after and growing its userbase. Its recent battle with Snapchat should be an indication of the lengths Facebook will go to in order to retain its userbase.

In terms of Facebook itself, worth noting that the platform is still seeing DAU growth:

That said, I'm not sure of the geo/age breakdown of that growth, which is probably important.

In terms of whether it will go the way of Myspace... I don't think so. Myspace was sold to a gigantic company who didn't have the knowledge or speed to adapt its platform for the evolving needs of its users. Facebook knows EVERYTHING about its users, and has the ability to rapidly push out changes.

Also keep in mind that Facebook is not afraid to reinvent itself, to force massive change on its users overnight. Don't underestimate the Zuck :)

I really want to hear what Peter Thiel thinks of Steemit (the guy who bought around 10% of FB for 500k)...

Probably under his radar at this point I'd imagine?

You would have to think so!

Interesting post! Those statistics are pretty crazy.I never have the Facebook app on my phone and I try to avoid using fb as much as possible. Facebook messenger is great though...Instagram is much more 'fun' than Facebook, I sometimes install the app on my phone but delete it after a week or so! Steemit all the way.

My IQ has risen since joining steemit :) I feel so relieved to barely be on facebook anymore!

give them hell to FB ! Steem on ^^

its funny I get so many friend invites and its all really hot girls with accounts that are a few days old. and all my feeds is mostly BS, so i dont go on Facebook all that much anymore. I prefer ig or snapchat.

Instagram, Steemit and Twitter for mine. Instagram for great pictures, Steemit to make myself more intelligent and more informed and Twitter for news, business and sport.

Ya since i been doing steemit, I really dont do the others all that much. but I know if anything starts to compete with facebook they probably just get bought out by them lol

Very true. Facebook are the acquisition kings. One day though, as it isn't monetized....

The funny part is that facebook through all there apps keep, asks and knows so much about you, I know they sell our info to advertisers....

I hate Facebook. I hate this site more than anything. I would like people to migrate so much. It is a true sect this business. I will follow you because your articles are very interesting.

Thank you sir. Just about done with facebook I am.

Since joining Steemit I haven't been on Facebook as much, but I logged into it during the UK election and it was full of bile and vitriol and it made me realise how depressing Facebook is.

The other this is I have a Facebook business page for my art work, where only 5% of my followers see my posts and then I get constantly nagged at by Facebook to pay them money to boost posts so I can reach my followers. I'm over it!!!!!

Great point of view, having to pay to reach is a no go in my eyes.

I would argue Steemit is more in the Myspace arena at the moment. It is still growing and figuring out what it wants and needs to be. It is still highly influenced by its original audience and posters.

e.g. Myspace evolved into a music sharing/customization hub. Steemit is currently a crypto/steemit hub.

Facebook knows what it is and does it job just fine. The younger generations won't really use it compared to snapchat, etc. But, I think it'll carry along just fine, especially with its successful push of instagram and instagram stories.

Steemit will find its place, and I'm sure it'll be more successful than Myspace, but it feels like we are in that awkward adolescent phase of the platform.

Out of curiosity, were you a myspace user during its hayday (~2003-2007)? I honestly don't mean any offense, but your comments sound like someone who wasn't living through those times, looking at myspace now and trying to figure where it fit in the picture back then :)

In 2006 Myspace was IT. It was the #1 social network. Majorly successful. Who your top 8 friends were really mattered. There were a couple of other networks around like Friendster and Bebo, but in most friend circles it was all about myspace.

In 2007 friends of mine started to jump over to this new network called Facebook. It was basically the same, but had a few features that really got users to jump over. For my friends, I think it was the ability to share photo albums, and to tag people in photos - the girls always wanted an easy way to see photos after an event, and the guys followed because it meant they could easily find photos of the girls they were friends with. The whole concept of "Writing on someone's wall" was also a big hit.

Myspace's DAU plummeted overnight and the platform essentially died.

The music sharing thing that it later became really wasn't so much an evolution as an attempt to re-launch using the power of the Myspace brand. Unfortunately it was just never something anyone wanted, though apparently it had some success in the indie music scene for a while.

The best comparison to a modern myspace would probably be uber. They've blazed the trail and become synonymous with ride-sharing as they've brought it into the public consciousness, but the cracks are starting to show . Anecdotally I'm seeing more reports of people preferring Lyft over uber, and uber has a ton of culture issues that have begun to impact its leadership (this week's CEO resignation). They've never shown a profit, but investors have been willing to take that risk because when they hit a certain point there's the ability to start printing money. Unfortunately, at this point something small may trigger a gigantic collapse.

Anyway, tldr Steemit would be lucky to have the success of myspace. To put it in context, my grandma knows what myspace is and she's in her 90s

haha your grandma is switched on!

Well said and fair point. Thanks for that background.

I was not one of the Myspace generation. I was nerdy enough to have my own website on Geocities and didn't need to build out anything else prior to jumping on the Facebook bandwagon in college.

Really informative reply, great outlook. When Steemit does find it's place, I am very interested to know where that is. Along the way, I have acquired a lot of steem as I believe sky is the limit.

Why post for free when you can earn if you do, right?

My favorite tagline when pushing it to friends:

Steemit - Be your own side hustle.

I also feel facebook is shit now from the repetitive content. I dont use it as much anymore. I'm only there for messanger. Steemit is my favourite !
