Interview with @aaronkoenig about "Bitfilm of the Day" : Film Competition On Steemit!

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

This is an Interview with @aaronkoenig about a new Competition on Steemit - "Bitfilm of the day"!

What is “Bitfilm of the Day”?

It is a new film competition on Steemit, the first of its kind, and a Steemit Exclusive. Every week day we will present a new film that we like and ask Steemians to vote for it. Every Sunday we will disclose the “Bitfilm of the Week”, the most popular of these five films, which will win a prize. How much prize money the film maker gets, depends on the Steemians who participate.

How does the voting work?

Every vote during the first 24 hours after the film’s launch will have the same weight. All the payouts will go into a jackpot. By counting it that way, whales’ votes will bring money to the winning film maker, but they will not decide who wins, which we consider to be fairer.

And the winner takes it all?

70% of the Steem Dollars will go to the winning film maker, the remaining 30% will pay the curator’s work of selecting and presenting the films. The Steem Power will stay with us. We will use it to vote for every film. So our own vote will be neutral, but hopefully increase the amount of prize money every week.

Why are you doing this?

We are thrilled by Steem and we want to try it out and do new things with it. This could be a cool way to attract film makers and film fans to Steemit. For film makers it is a new possibility to make some money with their work, and for film fans it’s a great way to discover good content and show their appreciation for a film. We have been organising digital film festivals and online film competitions for the last 15 years, and there is no film competition on Steem yet, so it is a natural thing for us to do.

What’s your background?

I am an entrepreneur, film producer and director. My company Bitfilm does two things: on the one hand we produce commercial explainer videos, most of them for Bitcoin and Blockchain companies. But we have also organised our own festival since 2000, the Bitfilm Festival, where we curate and reward films by film makers around the world.     In most of its history the festival has been showcasing digital animations from upcoming artists, classical 3D and 2D animation, as well as digital hybrids between live action and animation. But we also showed weird things like Machinima that are produced inside computer games or Demos which are executable files that make a computer produce animations in real time. We have always liked innovative stuff and therefore we started to experiment with Bitcoin as early as 2011. First we used it as prize money and as a voting tool. In the last two years we even focussed on films about Bitcoin only.

What do you like about Steemit?

It makes the concept of digital, decentralised money so much more accessible to normal people. Bitcoin has always been a bit geeky, you hardly meet girls at Bitcoin meetups. That’s completely different with Steem, it reaches a much broader audience.

Which kinds of films will you select for the competition?

For the first weeks we will draw on the Bitfilm Festival’s history, so we will show festival winners of the past and other all-time favourites of ours. These are excellent films with a proven track record. While they might not be new, I am sure most Steemians have not seen them yet, as they have only been shown at special festivals. In the long run we also want to present new films, possibly made by creative people from the Steemit community. So we are actively looking for film submissions. If you’re a film maker and want your film to be seen, please use this form to participate.

Will there also be real-life events?

Yes, we are planning to organise an event in a cinema every three months showing the “Bitfilms of the Week” on a big screen. They would then compete for the title “Bitfilm of the Season”. The first event will probably take place in our hometown Berlin, but we could also imagine events in other cities, if the local Bitcoin and Steem communities help us in organising them.

thanks for motivating and inspiring people to share their creativity this way. i'm sure it will be a fun project!

Fun and hard work!

Cool thanks for the interview. It would have been better if they called it something like Steemitfilm though - Bitfilm makes it sound like a Bitcoin project.

The name "Bitfilm" is much older than "Bitcoin", it stands for digital film, and a little bit of film.

great initiative, I'll think about participating!

I am glad you like the idea! Please upvote our first film if you like it, too!
