What Q&A

I just bumped into a brand new mobile SteemIt app and have been trying it out.

'What Q&A' is like the Steemit equivalent of Quora: you post a question, and other users will be able to post their answer to your question. You can then choose to vote for their answer if you like it.

The Difference

The big difference between 'What Q&A' and Quora is that this new mobile app works on the Steem Blockchain, and that you will get paid if someone likes your question or answer, just like on SteemIt or any other related apps.

Features

At this point in time, the 'What Q&A' app is only available as a mobile app, both for Android and IOS. A web version is scheduled to be released soon.

As you can read in the announcement post, the app comes with a lot of different features:

Interface

The app is fairly easy to use.

On the main screen, you simply click ‘Ask’ and a ready-to-go form is displayed.

You just type in your question, add a little more info if you want to, and choose a category and tags.

The main tag for the post will be ‘what-qa’.

SteemIt Feed

When you post the question, it will not only appear inside the app, but it will also show in your SteemIt feed.

Review

Pro

  • A good way to earn a little money on the side. Since the app is brand new, there aren’t many users yet, so your question has a good chance to be seen.
  • A way to get an answer to your questions.
  • Fairly easy to use interface.
  • Markdown can be used in the ‘more info’ field of your question.
  • Good explanation of the features in the introduction post
  • Plans to create a web-based version of the app.
  • The questions that have been posted to SteemIt on autopilot can be edited in your SteemIt editor afterward.

Cons

  • The app works with Steemconnect and requires your private active key to log in
  • All questions you ask are posted to your SteemIt feed. Personally, I would prefer to have the option whether or not to have it posted to my main account.
  • There is no ‘easy’ way to add an image to your question. To add one, you need to upload one in your SteemIt editor, then copy the markdown code and paste it into your question description field.

  • The added image will be added to your question inside the app, and it will show up in your SteemIt post. However, it won’t be set as your thumbnail/cover photo.

Instead, a boring white image with a question mark will be your feed picture (until you edit this manually by editing your SteemIt post).

  • Although you have the option to power up 100%, I can not see any proof of that in the post in my feed.
  • No recommended categories.
I assume the developers were going for the use of the same categories that are used on SteemIt. Personally, I’m not sure whether it is a good choice to not provide people with category options.

Conclusion

Overall, I think this app really has potential, but some structural points still need to be addressed.

Since I’m not yet comfortable enough to give them the private active key to my main account, I have been testing the app with one of my smaller, fairly dormant accounts.

You can see my test posts on my @organicgardener account

I’m really curious to find out how this app will further develop.

Yes, this seems to be promising. Many questions to be heard and spoken for. And hopefully answered.

This does seem like it has a lot of potential, but I'm with you on providing my active key. Be sure and let me know please if and what you find out about it using your 'more dormant' accounts. I'll be very curious to hear!

I will. So far, not a problem, but I want to know why they are requesting the active key if they’re not providing financial transactions...

Totally my thought, because it's just not necessary for them to have that information! I get red flags popping up in my head with that kind of stuff!

That’s a good thing.
Just be sure to keep those flags to yourself - lol
We’ve had enough flagging for this month ;0P

hahaha I will always keep my flags to myself lol

Oooo, definitely going to keep my eyes on this app - thanks for the heads-up, @simplymike! I feel the same way about the "deal breakers" - if it weren't for showing in my main feed, and requiring the active key, I'd already be downloading it. But hopefully those things (along with making pictures more user-friendly) will be addressed in future update, then I can start Q&Aing away. 😊

It definitely has a lot of potential. If they can fix those things, it will most surely be a success

Agreed. I did a bit more poking around, and at first, thought - "oh cool, this is through WhatsApp" (the heir to the FB Messager throne - LOL). Then I realized it's "what-app." I wonder if the closeness in names will be a good thing or a bad thing...

We’ll have to wait and see, I guess 😜

Thanks for the article. Interesting that they started with a mobile app.

The name is a little strange. I would have preferred a name starting with D. It seems to be important for such an app that it is decentralized. So I would have emphasized that aspect.

The app works with Steemconnect and requires your private active key to log in

Why do you consider this a Con? Because of using Steemconnect, or because a posting key would be sufficient?

Will download the app. Thanks for pointing it out to me.

There are plenty of users who got their funds stolen after having to use their private active key to log in to a SteemIt related app. Of course those apps were fake, but after getting hacked once, I’m rather safe than sorry

So, you would not see it as a problem when they would request the posting key only, right?

I would definitely feel safer.
My funds would be safe...

whew a bit scary yet even if it uses Steemconnect since it has access to our active posting key.

It is interesting though and maybe I can try it on another account.

That’s what I did. Also, I don’t like my feed to get cluttered with questions, just like I don’t want to get it cluttered with too many pictures without content (taken aside Spongebob this morning)

I can see where this app has the potential of doing quite well. I probably won't try it until there's a desktop version, though, just because tired old eyes and fat fingers aren't a good combo for typing. :)

I would hope that at some point things like this could end up in their own accounts or sticking to just their own sites instead of the Steemit feed, where people are pretty crazy critical picky discerning about what they see here. :)

Which is fine, since I'm here for long form posts rather than all short form, but the occasional steepshot or dMania meme is okay, too.

I agree. And I addressed that. The maker said he would look into it, but that it is actually a steemit-thing. There seems to be no way to prevent posting to this platform.

We’ll see where it goes :0)

P.s.: and I know all about fat fingers - lol. Been working on my phone for 5 weeks now. So annoying ;0(

Interesting that it would be a Steemit thing. I could see where the apps would benefit from having things appear on Steemit. For those who are inclined to use the app, it acts more or less as free advertising, and it helps to get more eyes on posts for the users.

I don't see the advantage for Steemit per se, other than a way to help build out the ecosystem. It can't be that hard to shut it off, though, or opt out of it somehow. I know Busy and Steemit share posts, but they're both meant to be long form. I haven't used the d-apps enough to know, but I'm guessing that Steemit stuff doesn't end up on DTube or dMania.

No, but Dmania and Dtube and Zapple stuff do end up on SteemIt. Everything does, no matter which app you use...

yeah, so that's what I'm getting at. Everything comes into Steemit, whether it makes sense for it or not, but not the other way around, which means to me, that there must be an off valve (or whatever it's called). It must be to encourage users to go from the main large platform (Steemit) and try out the other apps, because people might not find out about it as quickly if the app posts weren't coming into Steemit. I get that, but if that's the case, at some point, it all needs to just stay in it's own app or have ways to opt in and out of content.

Anyway, that's my $0.02 on the matter. :)

I agree.
On SteemIt, everyone’s raging about good, quality, long blog posts, still all the app posts make their way into the feeds...

To iffy with wanting the active key, also do they take a portion of your rewards for using the service?

Haven’t looked into that. Will do so tomorrow.

Great article, thanks for sharing. I've hit the upvote button for you and i will have a look into the app!

Thanks for the upvote.
No thanks for the advertisement. Not appreciated!!!

I think using this application for the first time will be a bit complicated but will
get used to it as time goes on. Thanks for the awareness. @simplymike

It’s actually pretty easy to use. No worries!
