HardFork20 The Most Hated To Date? 23/10/2018

in #steemit6 years ago

With the recent hardfork-20 it seems most people's excitement turned instead into anger and frustration rather than the joy everybody thought they would be experiencing after the changes.
And so far this change seems to be the most hated hardfork to date... but this could also be because we now have many many more users, remember there has been a big gap between the hardforks 19 and 20.

We have upgraded our servers to v0.20.0.... well actually patch 0.20.4 and this was for many different reasons.
E.g many users were unable to transact, accounts with less than 100% RC couldn't regenerate any mana, users powering up were not able to vote even with their newly added power, voting power was not carried over and so many had their voting power reset to near enough 0%, many accounts had minus negative "resource credits" showing and etc.

So yes the hardfork20 had some major bugs not going to deny that but it was all things Steem INC. would eventually fix and I feel they have done it pretty fast and a good job at fixing most of the issues considering how big some of these bugs really are.
Not only that but give these guys credit for letting us know everything they were doing behind the scenes along the way.

Many call it a disaster I wouldn't go that far and yes fair enough I would of rather had them delay the hardfork-20 update even further so we wouldn't lose a few days off Steemit but I feel in the end it was still a successful change over.
But mind you, obviously if this really is a success it is yet to be fully seen.

I cant complain much because I was only down for a day and had enough voting power to use Steemit normally "after 1 day of no usage" and no I am nowhere near the scale of a whale I am not even a dolphin yet, but my point is I realise for some people Steem is their livelyhood which is why I rather Steem INC. take their time with their next updates.

But from now on it will be possible for other frontends and apps to onboard its new users without having to rely on Steem INC. to verify all the new free accounts.

The amount of Steempower you have dictates how much RC's you can use on the Steem blockchain.
Every action on the blockchain will consume RC's for (example: voting, posting, commenting, transacting).

The amount of RC's per different action is now not fixed and can change over the course of time, basically it's another decentralised free market system within one, It will eventually supposedly find balance, which I feel we are now at a place where we can access better how the system as been balancing its users at all different levels.

Now that we have a understanding of RC's what are some of the other major changes?

Well..

Unlimited Editing-

Yup we can now edit all our post no matter how old they are rather then just being able to edit within the 7 days mark, but as a note and warning just remember nothing ever truly really goes away on the blockchain, the original first version of the post can still be found.

Free Account Creation-

Free in the sense that we can now instead use our resource credits to create new accounts.

Curating Voting System Change-

It was normally recommended to vote on new posts at the 30min mark or just before this is so curators could get their best returns but now its said any votes placed before the 15mins mark is no longer part of a possible curation strategy but instead any vote cast before 15mins "its worth" will now be cast back into the rewards pool instead.

Faster Commenting-

There is no longer a 20 secs delay until you can write your next comment while for some this is great it didn't effect me much as I would normally write longer replies anyway, so basically now you can write as many comments and post them as fast as you want.
Some of you maybe thinking this is a dream come true for spammers but in reality its not.
Remember the new RC's? Be warned they would need to have the right amount of mana needed, so in one way this stops people posting as much rubbish in their hopes of getting a vote.

Faster Delegation-

One I am particularly happy about is faster delegation cancellations as this would take a whole 7 days normally, while this can be useful for those who are getting their delegation's suddenly cancelled it can be a little time consuming for those needing their delegation back, I feel that the new "5 days to confirm a cancel mark" is pretty good.

Thats it the end giphy.gif

And so for users that are already onboard this might not be the most exciting news but for the Steem blockchain you could consider it a major step on the roadmap to success.

I also know many users who took a week off from Steem until things got back to normal if this is you then I hope this post makes it a little more clear of the recent changes.

Basically you also need to think of it this way.. there is simply not much point in developing SMT's and Communities when joining them in the first place is not going to be done with ease.
To put it plain and simple this upgrade referred to as HF20 velocity is going to help with scaling and mass adoption for all the currant and future dapps that will powered and be running on STEEM.

Thanks for the info

No problem @jkenny some good changes I think, I just wanted to wait abit before doing this to see if the Rc updates turned out to be decent or if there would be any issues with equilibrium later, so far it seems ok.

I thought it was going amazingly well for a while but then the rewards started coming back down.

Ah yes that was because Steem was down for a while and people couldn't vote so there was extra money in the pool, it was great while it lasted @mysearchisover

Thanks for all the HF explanation @simonjay. A lot for me to absorb.

Wow glad you still found it useful thought it would be a good reminder thanks @manorvillemike

How? When I go to an old post, the edit button is not there.

Cg

This is very strange @cryptogee I just went now to a post that was over 2 months old and I could edit, the button is at the bottom of the article, not sure why yours is not showing.

Thank you for sharing these ideas about HF20. Receive my affections

Glad you found it still interesting @felixgarciap thank you.
