August Steemit Stats: Retention & Growth

Daily Metrics

Measures the amount of daily active accounts, as tracked by steemd. As you can see active user's has not seen sustained growth over the last month. The massive bump in daily use can likely be attributed to new user's popular in similar spaces (crypto & anarchy) advertising steemit. The user's they brought, for whatever reason, decided steemit was not the space for them.

It is possible that older user's left in this exact same time span and that's why we look about even to the start of the month, but that seems highly unlikely.

It looks like the decline has stalled and we've moved back to the same core users we had at the start of the month.

Active Daily Percent of Total

Without consistent daily use from our new user's our ability to grow continues to decline. The only upside is that we appear to have hit a trough around 6% over the last week. Our month long average was approx. 8.5%

Week Ending Graph

We averaged around 16,000 accounts active each week over August, though the weekly use fluctuated greatly. The current week ending in 8/31 has just under 13,000 accounts active, or 16% of total users.

Total's for August

While growth continues to climb, retention has just started to stall it's decline. Hopefully we can see another kick from outside sources to drive up actual retention and engagement on the site.

Growth

Month over month, or M/M, total account growth was a staggering 77%. In this same time frame daily active accounts grew an upsetting ~5%. You might notice some disparity between those two numbers, and you wouldn't be wrong.

Daily account growth ranged from under 1% to over 4% for a daily average growth in steemit accounts of around 2%, very positive. Now if we could just get people to hang around and get to know our lovely community!

Conclusion:

Growth won't quit, but that's still meaningless if our subscriber base doesn't hang around. It's possible that with the new competition on the horizon users are choosing to shop around. Maybe try and "strike it rich" elsewhere.

What's important to note is that this is only a month's worth of user data on a fledgling website. While it's indicative of where we are at now as a community and site, it says very little of what the future holds.

Author's Note:

Thank you for reading! I've finally managed a consistent schedule for these retention/web analytics posts of every two weeks. I jumped the gun on this one because I would like the series to culminate with each month.

growth won't quit!! good to hear! :D

I was just considering how my first month on steemit has gone - and this post looks at exactly this time frame. While I am here to stay, several of those who checked this site out on my recommendation during this time are either on the fence about joining, or are taking the site seriously enough to carefully consider their posting strategy before diving in.

Because of how steemit currently looks/feels/functions, very few people that I am acquainted with would jump right into the fray if they just happened upon this site while browsing the web. So maybe another piece of the user retention puzzle is figuring out how to promote steemit in such a way as to give people an idea of what they're seeing when they click on a link to visit the site?
