I follow people that resonate with me, that probably sounds pretentious, what I mean is that if the post is good and interests me then I generally follow, I also think that comments and replies tell a lot about a person and those other two factors definitely play a part in my decision.
Awesome techniques you have there. I also believe you can tell from the comments what type of person you're dealing with.
