That's not unusual. Many people will try out something new, and if they do not meet "instant success" they will go elsewhere. However, when critical mass is reached that so many of their friends or associates are on Steemit, they will have to come back.
Andreas M. Antonopoulos gave an interview just on this topic and comparing the path of growth Facebook took to where Steemit is now.
the drop offs and retention are a problem.....but there are people trying to help solve this such as #Minnowsupport and #steemitbc
