If you're a painter or photographer it may be hard to get too many words, but trust me people really value a bit of background information.

While quite a few of the artists I follow (on other sites as well not just here) will happily ramble on about the piece or just what was going on in life while they were making it, I also know several that want the art to stand on its own without propping it up.

Least the people on here read most of the time, have been on deviantart where people have asked questions in the comments that were in the artist description XD
